Try popular culture. That style of Guy Fawkes mask was invented for the movie "V for Vendetta", and was worn by the main character. The symbolism is obvious, if you look up the movie on the internet.
One synopsis of the movie reads, "A shadowy freedom fighter known only as "V" uses terrorist tactics to fight against his totalitarian society."
Now do you understand why they were all wearing that mask?
