Weird hair colours though?
When i first saw anime hair colours that was just a "the way its drawn" thing.

Then i met someone whose hair became naturally pink under the right circumstances. Normal haircolour, a rather dark bright red, which when bleached enough by sun, saltwater, frequent washing due to said saltwater and not letting it grow out too long as it darkened the longer it got... Not light bright pink, but definitely and unquestionably pink.

Since then, i've kept eyes open and actually, while "really" blue or green probably wont happen, you CAN actually find people with black hair that can be visibly towards either of those colours to the point where you can claim that they have blue/green hair, even if just barely.

So, greatly exaggerated but not quite as impossible as you would assume. And purple could probably be achieved if you tried enough various "methods"(that does not use any kind of dye or tonechanger that cannot happen naturally(because that would be cheating!)) of getting someone with above pink hair to have their hair change towards something more blue-ish or darker.

I do have to wonder though if the concept of using weird colours came about on its own or if someone ran into one of the rare real examples and got inspired.

For anime, I figure it's color-coding to help us tell the characters apart. (A) manga often has a small shop of artists; they can get away with black and white. Anime uses many artists. Everybody tries their best, but problems of consistency arise.

I suspect for most of the colorful hair seen on our streets, it is also an aid to recognition.
