It doesn't make sense for Kimiko not knowing the arrangement in all those years, I think I'm going with Soun and Genma keeping the engagement a mostly forgotten secret all those years, and so neither Nodoka nor Kimiko or the respective children knew anything of the sort until is was sprung on them....
