now ideally to mirror an existing archive would you need archive maintainers permission or would you need to ask all the authors who have work archived there? assuming nigh identical mirror mind you... The latter - although it also depends upon how each author gave the archival permission in the fi...

Criticism and comment is specifically allowed under the Fair Use clause (section 107) of US copyright law. It allows you to directly quote small sections without having to worry about permissions. What Fair Use doesn't allow is the wholesale quoting of large portions of the work without permission -...

I have run into some wonderful stuff. But the author has burned down and gone sour on the whole project. I should be deprived because somebody else is in a snit, even if it's a very important somebody in this particular case? Deprived? What the heck gives you the right to dictate to the artist how ...

I'm not going to take a stance for or against here at this point, but one thing that doesn't seem to have been brought up -- unlike most copyrighted work, authors of fanfics are offering up their work free for the taking in the FIRST place. Outside the rudeness issue, is there a legal difference be...

On the question of abandoning copyrights, what is the U.S. law on it? An unexpired US copyright is never lost or abandoned unless the work is deliberately and explicitly released into the Public Domain by the copyright owner. Being in or out of print makes no difference to the validity of the copyr...

- after all, a fanfic cannot claim a copyright since their work is a derivative work based on an existing copyright. That is not true. Under US law in the case of derivative works, the principle of cascading permissions and protections apply. In a derived work, the originating copyright holder has ...

>>ALL fanfics are protected by copyright laws in the US Extremely untrue... As much as the US would like their copyright laws do not apply to the rest of the world... (especially as the stupid mouse keeps on trying to remain copyrighted) Unless you live in a country which is not a signator of the B...

Before arguing about something so hotly you should make sure it's not a translation glitch. Which is a bit hard to do without the original. I wanted to order the manga in the original Japanese but I'm constantly short of free money to do so. I have all of the Japanese Ranma tankoubans as well as th...

Ranma's "don't fight girls" attitude is mostly cannon - it's more properly "tries to avoid hitting pretty girls when he's a guy". He exhibits it the strongest during the first Shampoo, Ukyou, and Konatsu story arcs. The Konatsu arc is fairly late in the series and is probably whe...

I think you guys are overestimating the power of modern weapons. I think you've never seen a Hog on a live bombing run, either. We're not talking small arms fire here, bucko ... modern CAS can quite literally wipe a section of terrain off the face of the earth if there's no need to occupy that part...

I could imagine Phoenix taking exception to and attacking any planes getting close enough to bomb. *snicker* Yeah, right - I can just see some of Saffron's folks trying to intercept a flight of Q-5I travelling at over 500 knots. . . . Face it - if the PLAAF wanted to clear out the Nyuchezu, it coul...

About the question as to what use are martial arts against modern weaponry. Tell me one modern weapon or machine that doesn't create heat? Any engine could possibly make enough heat that a variation on the Hiryu Shoten Ha. Not to mention that I doubt that is anywhere near the limit of the abilities...

Also remember that the Japanese school year starts in April (first Monday for issei ("orientation week"), second Monday for nisei/sansei) and ends the middle of March. There is essentially only a two week break between school years, and the summer vacation is significantly shorter than the...
