Erm... well if she could force her sword to do that, she'd get Bankai, now wouldn't she?

Nodoka and Ryuken were the last two Quincy initiates and were fiancees, but the two of them had a falling out and both ended up with their respective spouses. This would make the Ishida situation worse if I did it that way.

Excuse me, but this idea sounds much more interesting than simply saying "They're cousins" and it does work as well if you look at it from a certain point of view. If the falling out between Nodoka and Ryuken was so spectacular that even Ishida, who hadn't been born yet, has gotten to know about it from second hand sources then that must mean that Nodoka is a woman who his father, his estranged and hated father, despises. If a boy related to her showed up with Shinigami powers then that'd bear watching, right? Analyzing, right? There might even be certain potential in befriending him, just to unnerve the old man.
And you also get the added bonus of much more interesting interactions between Nodoka and Ryuken. Instead of a very drab and boring "Hey, Brother" and "Hey Sister" you have the two at each others throats, with Ishida playing nice just to further irritate his father.
Sounds pretty good to me.
I like this idea of yours far better than: "They're cousins."

It does sound very amusing. Plus, it would be a huge laugh to see Ranma defend him mom with Shikigami techniques if Ryuken got so angry he attacked her without thinking, or if Ranma jumped into a spar between them thinking his mom was about to be killed.

If that happens, Ranma would be both Shinigami and Quincy. This would cause interest from two evil Shinigami- Meyuri, who replaced Uruhara as head of Shinigami R&D, and played an indirect but deliberate role in the death of Ishida's grandfather so that he could vivisect the Quincy's soul (Vivisect and soul don't exactly match as terms, but its the closest description to what happened), and Aizen, whose desire to bring Shinigami power (or at least HIS Shinigami power) to the next level brought about his creation of enhanced Hollows and his obsession with Uruhara's accidental discovery of how to merge Shinigami and Hollow powers (Thus bringing about the SS arc and at least one more arc of Bleach that I haven't seen or read yet). They'd both want to take Ranma apart to figure out how he does it.
Oh, and Sedai, brute force domination (Which is what my comment on Akane and zanpakutos was about) will not get you a Bankai. To reach Shikai, you have to consider the sword (and get it to consider you) as a colleague. That will get you to Shikai. Only when you have achieved true partnership with the soul slayer will it even allow you to attempt to become its superior (This brings about the zanpakuto's manifestation for the test - unless you have the cheat device Yoruichi and Uruhara came up with and used for Ichigo). If you merely demand power from it before you learn how to ask for its power, it won't listen to you, and you're only barely better off than if you were holding a normal sword. If bringing raw power against a zanpakuto was all that was needed to reach Bankai, Zaraki Kenpachi would have done it by now. As it was, he didn't even think that learning the name of his sword was important until after he fought Ichigo.

One more thing - in ANY Ranma/Bleach crossover, what happens if the Ghost Cat turns up?

Heh. I'm thinking of having the Ghost Cat be similar to the Bounto. Yeah, I know they're filler characters, but hey, its better filler than the Naruto filler.

If by uses them to her advantage you mean lording them over others, claiming they make her something she's clearly not, and stooping to emotional blackmail to hang on to them, you'd be closer to the truth.

Now now, let's not argue here.
Hmmm.. I don't know much about Bleach so I can't offer much in terms of ideas. I don't know if this has been breached but is this a rewrite of the timeline? a fusion? or an altiverse type deal?
Sorry if this has been answered already.

Hmmm... And I thought, she did get along finely with the battle suit (which had its own personality, even beating on Ranma on its own). She even called it "Do-chan". So why can't she get along with a zanpak'to? Remember: she is by default nice and polite with anything that doesn't try to get under her skin.

Wait a minute... You mean, the anime didn't deviate from manga forever, it's just a detour to gain a breathing space...? Am I missing something?

Anime was progressing faster than the manga (early episodes were the equivalent of three or more manga chapters). If they had continued on at the same pace they would have run out of manga to adapt. Hence the filler arc to allow Kubo-sensei to write more of the manga.
