Ranma/Harry Potter crossover: Veela 1/2

Postby Dumbledork » Thu Apr 24, 2008 6:39 am

Ranma has fallen into a lot of different girl springs (succubus, mermaid, goddess, angel, demon woman, drow, elf,...), but never in the 'spring of drowned Veela'. With the vast number of Ranma/Harry Potter out there no one has yet tried a Veela!Ranma fic.

The story goes like usual until the arrival at Jusenkyo. Ranma falls into a different spring, the 'spring of drowned Veela'. But as the Veela are magical creatures and Ranma is a squib the effects of the curse are quite different from what was expected. Instead of turning back to normal with warm water the curse bled over to Ranma’s male form resulting in the first male Veela.

As an additional bonus Ranma getting cursed awakens his magical potential (Nodoka is a squib in this story and so was Ranma) and his magical signature is picked up by the Chinese magical government who then send aurors to Jusenkyo to find out what happened.

I have different ideas as how to handle this. First of all, there will be a Ranma/Fleur pairing and Ranma won’t attend Hogwarts. The problem is Ranma’s age (16 when cursed). There are different possibilities of how to handle this. I could change the spring into the ‘spring of drowned YOUNG Veela’. Not much is said about Veela in the HP books so I can make up whatever I want. Maybe Veela automatically unlock their abilities when puberty hits and the spring has taken that into account and changed Ranma’s age so that he could start controlling his new abilities at a young age such as to avoid possible problems affecting Veela that aren’t able to control their powers.

Ranma would be 10 or 11 after falling into the spring.

The Chinese are at a loss as to what to do with Ranma as a male Veela is unheard of and there aren’t any in China. But someone needs to teach Ranma. So they decide to contact one of the most influential wizards known, Albus Dumbledore.

Albus doesn’t know much about Veela either but knows someone who can help, Apolline Delacour, who’s married to a rich French businessman and has two daughters.

She agrees to teach Ranma and Ranma travels to the Delacour estate and meets the whole family (including Fleur and Gabrielle). He learns more about his new powers and as he now is able to use magic he decides to accompany Fleur to Beauxbatons.

That’s pretty much the start. What about the rest of the NWC?

The Amazons: possible for the guide to take Ranma and Genma to the amazons like in canon. Cologne, who’s a witch, immediately notices that Ranma is a Veela. Maybe she could be the one to contact Dumbledore and I would leave the Chinese government out of it.

Nodoka: Nodoka is a squib (one of her parents was magical) and knows a lot about the magical world. And while Genma doesn’t know anything about Veelahe knows that magic exists and about Nodoka’s heritage. Before Ranma is sent to France Albus contacts his mother who allows Ranma to travel to France.

The Tendos: before Genma and Ranma return home to Nodoka Genma decides to visit Soun first and see if he can still marry Ranma to one of Soun’s daughters (he doesn’t know the girls’ ages). But to Genma’s dismay the girls are 16+ and not interested in a much younger boy. The Tendos know about the magical world and Kasumi recently graduated from a Japanese magical school (Nabiki and Akane are squibs). Ranma and the other girls become friends now that the fiancé problem is out of the way and Kasumi will tell him about the magical world.

Ukyo: I haven’t decided yet.

Fleur is two years older than Ranma and already a student at Beauxbatons. Gabrielle is a few years younger. Apolline decides to send Ranma to Beauxbatons for several reasons. There are no other Veela in any other magical school and Apolline herself is a very busy woman and doesn’t have the time to teach Ranma, but leaves that task to Fleur. It takes a lot of time for a Veela to control their aura and other powers and Fleur could teach Ranma while both are at Beauxbatons.

Ranma will attend Beauxbatons as a girl for several reasons. He’s the only male veela and would draw a lot of attention (more than a female veela would). And as Beauxbatons only has a few male students Ranma wouldn’t have any peace, what with all the girls after him. Butof course male Ranma would appear from time to time after hot water accidents and having the girls wonder as to who the good looking boy is.

Later on Ranma will accompany Fleur to Hogwarts for the Triwizard Tournament (and one of the reasons I made Ranma younger than Fleur is to avoid him entering the tournament) and meet Harry and the rest of the gang.
And that's the bottom line 'cause Dumbledork said so.

If done the right way this could be very Ranma like in the way suiters throw themselves at him/her. If I remember right veela are extremely atractive to the oposite sex, which could cause Ranma a lot of problems untill he/she learns how to control the actractiveness powers. Even then Ranma usually draws a lot of unwanted physical atraction to his/her problems would be far from over.

I like the idea, just one problem. If Ranma goes to Beauxbatons, you will have to create a whole new school system with new teachers and students for Ranma to interact with. This could be quite a challenge, but if done right it could breath a breath of life into the Ranma/Harry crossover. Finally, by your description of ages, it sounds like Gabrielle could be in the same year as Ranma so maybe they could hang out. As for the tornament, Ranma cant go as the schools only bring student old enough to go. Maybe you can get around that by having the star pupil Flear begging for Ranma to go along.

Well that's it, good idea hope you can make something of it.

Okay, first off, whoever may take up this idea? Know what you're talking about. The veela are ripped, slightly modified, from mythology, so at least read the myths before you get started on figuring where the deviations are.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavic_fairies

Chinese magical government who then send aurors to Jusenkyo to find out what happened.

Private request? Anyone who does this, try and account for regional differences. The Chinese aren't going to use freaking latin.

So they decide to contact one of the most influential wizards known, Albus Dumbledore.

Gleh. Honestly, this is very difficult to credit. Dumbledore is influential and 'teh roxxorz' in Britain. There's no evidence that he is particularly noted outside those borders, and the mehtastic reactions of the other headmasters and students seems evidence that he is not.

Plus, if you're looking for advice on someone who turned into a Russian/Bulgarian creature of myth... you'd probably go to Eastern Europe first. It's not like the presence of veela in Bulgaria is a secret, what with using them as mascots and all.

That's the big problem with the setup - why would Ranma get sent way off to the side to France, where there is exactly one veela, rather than Bulgaria or Western Russia, which is both far closer, and the home of the veela?

It seems a lot more likely that Ranma would end up going to 'school' at Durmstrang, or somewhere in Russia. Though you would have to bear in mind that China and Russia hate each other at this point, they're more prepared to war with each other than the 'capitalist oppressors'. Honestly, China doesn't have many friends at this point in history. Though you'd have to determine where the wizards relate to the mundane government.

Also something you'd need to note, is when this story takes place. If it's the start of Fleur's schooling, then, presuming you go with the dates supplied in the HP Lexicon, then this story would be in 1989 - the tail end of the Perestroika era in the Soviet Union, so the Cold War would still be in swing.

(and one of the reasons I made Ranma younger than Fleur is to avoid him entering the tournament)

Well, it's not like just him putting his name in the cup means he'll still be picked. He can enter and just be rejected.

Honestly, this idea has a bit of fun potential, but the big problem is that... well, the same problem as usual with 'changed main character' stories. Where do you go from there? Ranma meets the Harry crew... what then? Heck, for that matter, you'd have already had the story going on for four/five years, what happend then?

It's the big fun bit with Ranma fics in general, really - other than 'solve everything' stories, you have to either grab the conflict from elsewhere (Hm, there might actually be some interest factor in seeing the events of Deathly Hallows from the perspective of someone who was actually doing something, instead of wandering around the island acting like a Rowling-lobotomized retard - how did she take such a potentially-interesting situation, and then make it so boring?), or make it up whole cloth.

... And, maybe studying the socioeconomic history of the Soviet Union would be a tad more than most writers are comfortable with. But, well... if you're going to put the time into it at all, why not put in the time to do the necessary research and pump out something you can really be proud of, eh?

I agree with Wolf, the idea has some merit. Mostly as a way to push the story in, but then what?

It's hard to see Ranma's presence, especially when changing into a species that isn't human (given how Bigoted the wizarding world is), would have the HP events go the same.

So it's more going back to basics.

Think smaller, what happens immediately after this change in Ranma?

More depth into the Sinno-Russo magic relations would be an interesting angle.

As would having more information on Durmstrang, but the research is key here.

Worldbuilding would be very helpful at this stage. Where you can figure how this part of the world works, giving more for Ranma to interact with.

All of those are valid points. But I looked up information about Veela at wikipedia before writing this idea, but using all that information would make the story too complicated. I prefer to use the information we get in the HP books and add to that whatever I like. What do we know about Veela from the HP books? They are beautiful women that can mesmerize men and turn into birds of prey that can shoot fireballs.

This fic isn't supposed to be an accurate rendition of Veela mythology but the main idea is for Ranma to get a different girl curse and see him deal with it.

And I chose France because I want to write a Ranma/Fleur story. It's as simple as that.

About Dumbledore: well, HE is influential. Look at all the titles he has. And he defeated Grindelwald.
And that's the bottom line 'cause Dumbledork said so.

Of course you don't use everything. You pick and choose from the myths to see what you like and what you want to add. The myths, however, are at least useful for giving you a general idea.

And I chose France because I want to write a Ranma/Fleur story. It's as simple as that.

Okay.

Now, why do the Chinese choose France? No offence, but the author's desires are irrelevant if he can't have the characters justify the actions he wants them to take.

Seriously, there are so many reasons you could come up with, but if you can't even be bothered to make the character's actions make sense to themselves... Well, I don't know if I really have anything to talk about at that point.

About Dumbledore: well, HE is influential. Look at all the titles he has. And he defeated Grindelwald.

Titles: All but one is British. Again, influential in Britain. Doesn't mean anyone cares outside the little island.

Defeated some dude in Europe. That's far away and nigh-irrelevant to the Chinese.

And, the people who were hardest hit by Grindelwald, both France and Eastern Europe, are the ones who we observe to be reacting to The Grand Dumbledore with 'meh'.

- Send Fleur to Ranma instead of Ranma to Fleur if you have problems finding a good motivation for Ranma going to Europe.

- You could also skip the Chinese and have Ranma become discovered by the magical community later in Japan.

- You could also consider working Negima into it, and send Ranma & Fleur to Mahora Academy.

- Making Ranma a child doesn't really seems as fun as a teenaged Ranma.

Thanks. All of those are good ideas. I'll skip Dumbledore andthe Chinese government. Instead Ranma and Genma visit the Amazons and Cologne, who's a witch, recognizes Ranma's new species. Genma knows about magic because Nodoka is a squib but her parents are magical. So his first reflex will be not to hide from Nodoka but go to her for advice.

And I agree, I won't change Ranma's age drasitcally. But his female form could pass as a 14 yeard old and Nodoka will try to adopt female Ranma as Ranma's younger sister. That would give Ranma two extra years at a magical school.

I also have an idea for Ryoga. He'll fall into a different spring. With all the magical creatures in Harry Potter there are a lot of interesting possibilities. From a flubberworm to a thestral or even a dementor or a boggart.

As for Negimathat's an idea, but I don't want to add too many crossovers to the story and I've only read the first 12 Negima manga books.
And that's the bottom line 'cause Dumbledork said so.

I'd recommend thinking about that aspect and deciding hard on what creature you want to turn him into. It's possible to make the decision, and then find out later that the creature you turned him into isn't all that appealing.

That's actually what happened with Genius & Ditz. I thought what I was turning Ryoga into at first would be good, but it turned on me later on.

That said... maybe a Jarvey would be interesting. It resembles a large ferret, and it's capable of human speech. However, it has a penchant for mostly using short, and rude, statements, insults, and phrases usually in a constant stream.

One thing I noticed that you didn't say anything about:
Which genre is the story going to be: Comedy? Drama? Romance? Epic? This will affect which characters to bring into the story and where it would best take place.

Yeah, the genre. Haven't really thought about it. As I said before I've only listed some rough ideas that need a lot of polishing.

I'm wiritng the story at the moment, and I've done a lot of changes to the original idea (and should be much more appealing). But I have a problem, the Triwizard Tournament. I'm going to add a fourth school, a Japnese school (where most of the NWC cast are studying). How would the tournament be called? Quadrowizard? My Latin isn't all that good.

One possible solution might be to have Durmstang not be able to attend that year for whatever reason, and have the other two schools look around for a replacement school to attend to make up the third, and invite the Japanese school.

Reguarding Ryoga, personally I'd go for pool of drowned house elf...a house elf with a really bad attitude of course, considering who falls into it.

The house elf is a really neat idea. And how about having him bond to Ranma somehow? Hating Ranma and trying to go against his orders but to no avail whenever he's in his house elf form?
