Unnamed potential Ranma/Read or Die crossover

For submitting and talking about story ideas. Idea submissions must be at least five paragraphs long, and include plot points, summaries of which characters are involved, and, for fanfiction, how it differs from canon. Both original and fanfiction ideas welcome. Though original works should have more development. Replying posts must give actual commentary, no "GREAT IDEA" or "THIS SUCKS".

Unnamed potential Ranma/Read or Die crossover

Postby Kadunta » Fri May 26, 2006 2:40 am

Someone (was it WarGiver or someone?) mentioned on the IRC channel earlier this week that he had considered writing a Ranma / Read or Die -crossover. This gave me a few ideas, but I hope I'm not treading too close to his plans -- I'd be most willing to let him have the stage first. I'm leaving "Dead Talk/ Meddlin' Momma" out of my plans until I get enough interest to delve into Oriental mysticism.
Now, what I had thought...
Begins in Ranma-time a while past Ryu Kumon. Nodoka still doesn't know who 'Ranko' is (I've read the manga only that far and only vols 1--30 have been published in Finnish so far).
In RoD-time, we're talking soon after the OVA (The Great Men incident). Yomiko's still working for the British Library.
How they meet -- remember Nodoka using Genma's old scrolls detailing Umisenken to make envelopes for her letters ? Now, let's play Divergence/Fusion. Genma had left also some scrolls he, Soun and Happosai had stolen during their travels. One of these just happens to be a lost chapter of Genji Monogatari, "The Tale of Genji", and an envelope with a part of this ends up in the hands of the Library. First, they send standard operatives to get the scroll, posing as the real owners.
Nodoka trusts Genma more than he's worth and refuses to turn the scroll over to them. The operatives think along the lines "okay, we got one mid-thirties lady and her daughter present -- let's just take the scroll by force," which is, of course, a Very Bad Idea. Considering the actions of the Library in RoD TV, I don't think this is that far-fetched scenario, even though the scroll has nothing(?) to do with Mr. Gentleman.
The operatives report of a Great Man, and the Library send Yomiko (maybe Drake, too?) to deal with the situation. No, Ranma's not really a Great Man.
This is how the two universes meet. As for what then... I was hoping to create a friendship between Ranma and Yomiko (how this happens is undecided). The story would cover the events between RoD OVA and RoD TV until Yomiko ends up in the place she is eventually found by the Paper Sisters and Nenene. I'm working on only what I know from the OVA and TV-series (actually, I haven't seen all episodes of the latter yet, only up to the copter crash), so I think I have rather free hands to tell what was going on in there.
And the pairing? Not certain if I write in a romantic one. Not certain if there'll be a lot of "wet sleeves" either.
Some common, unoriginal ideas...
- Ranma attempting to learn paper manipulation / phasing and analyzing them (little luck -- but Ryoga does know Iron Cloth tech though, so maybe the paper manipulation is possible... with something else than paper.)
- Ranma attempting to teach Yomiko a bit... even with her making slow progress, the time gap is rather long so there might be some visible results.
- Yomiko attempting to get Ranma interested in books (he won't go as nuts about them as she is in any case)
Some events:
- Ranma leaving Nerima (alone or not?)
- a shared trip for different goals
- Nancy-double's child and losing him
- the fire at the Library
Some potential quotes:
"Excuse me, are you one of the Great Men?" "One of? I ain't 'one of the great', I'm the greatest!"
"Oh how manly Genji was! Even though I highly disapprove how much he cried."
"A poetry-spouting womanizer -- are ya sure he wasn't related to the Kunos?" (okay, maybe the 'womanizer' is the wrong word here... but Genji slept around alot, and I don't know if Ranma knows who Casanova was.)
I've read only the first 10 chapters of GM myself... maybe this fic will give me some incentive to get back to it.
Comments, suggestions? Too massive a task for a fledgling like me?
... and now I got a really bad feeling I've heard someone describe this kind of setup before ... and that most of the stuff in the way of interaction between Ranma and Yomiko is all too clichéd ... must try to come up with something new ...

I can see some possibility for this idea, the only problem that I can see is how are you going to get Ranma actively involved in the R.O.D. universe. There is little to no common ground between Ranma and the cast of either RoD or RoD the T.V. series.
Unless, of course, Yomiko and Drake finishes their mission to the insainty that is Ranma's life and they convince our favorite aqua-transexual to go with them to London and the British Royal Library(Drake sees the potental for Ranma to become an agent and comvinces him by mentioning the possibility of old and forgotten scrolls detailing anicent martial arts that might be in their archives). However, when the trio arrives, that's when everything goes all pear-shaped in the RoD universe...

Yes, I kinda noticed that myself as well soon after the first post. Anyway, I'll still try to get something done with this, but I'll be taking it only as a writing exercise in English, which will mean I won't shy away from clichés either (and I can hammer a boatload of them together all on my own). SoftRogue, thanks for your input, I might try to do something with your ideas, even though I doubt I'll be posting the results anywhere. Maybe someday someone else will :)
Summa summarum, sorry about this. May this thread suffer a swift death as it plummets down into oblivion.
