Nabiki 6/17 idea outline - a fusion of Ranma 1/2 & Nanaka 6/17

Link to synopsis of Nanaka 6/17

This came to me after watching the anime Nanaka 6/17 recently. I figure Nabiki is the best match for being the Nanaka character of the story.

Ten years ago the Saotome and Tendo families were very good friends and Ranma & Nabiki were friends along with the tag along Akane. Ranma is slightly younger than Nabiki ( given that Ranma’s age is never really stated in canon – only in the age mushroom arc and even then never explicitly stated) He is already being trained in the basics of martial arts.

5 yr old Akane has a crush on Ranma and wants to learn martial arts like him.

When it is announced that Genma is taking Ranma on his first training trip Ranma finds Nabiki crying because her best friend is going away. Ranma tells her to be a big girl and stop crying. She sniffs and he picks up her magical Domiko stick and says she should be like magical Domiko and wave her magical wand and say “be a _____” In this case “be a grown up” and they would both be grown-ups together.

Nabiki throws herself in to her studies and finds that because she is a bit more knowledgeable than her contemporaries she is able to manipulate them. Which doesn’t make her popular. She remembers the promise to be grownups together with Ranma and thinks that because he is going on his journey that when he returns he will be much more grown up than she will. Then he doesn’t return, though he sends post cards. Then her mother dies and she becomes colder to her friends who are not as serious as she is. She still aims to be a grown up for Ranma for when he returns.

Ranma is taken on his training journey( okay so Genma just didn’t bring Ranma back for ten years, what’s the problem?) – all over Japan, over to China and ending with Jusenkyo

Just prior to the present – Ranma-chan & her panda pop arrive on the Tendo doorstep. et cetera.

Nabiki is made the official fiancée right away as she had been waiting for him to return so they could be grownups together. She is not so sure she wants him when he returns and she sees how childishly he acts.

She does not see that the way she has grown up has closed her off from her contemporaries and because she has found that she can manipulate people that she is becoming quite cynical – the fannon Ice Queen as it were. In fact she is so focused on being a grownup she hasn’t stopped to think what sort of grownup she wants to be or is in fact becoming.

At the start of this story Ranma is rather upset about the way Nabiki rents him out and she is mad at him for acting so childishly. They have an argument at the top of a bridge embankment . He says something, she takes off in a huff, misses a step and falls down the stairs and is knocked out.

When she awakes she thinks she is six years old and that she “became a grownup” due to the magic of the Magical Domiko wand. i.e. the past eleven years have not happened –she has no memory of them. When she sees Ranma she thinks he too has become a grown up like her and is still 6 inside like she is.

For whatever reason Nabiki never sees Ranma change into Ranma-chan, and being only six his trip to jusenkyo is 11 years in her future so she doesn't know about the curse. While, as a six year old, she would find the change magical and fascinating (think ukyou’s manga reaction) she hasn’t seen it. And Ranma for his part hasn’t explained mostly by chance- Given the way the curse works in canon for funniest effect.

Nabiki sees Kasumi as Mommy and wonders where Kasumi went. Soun says she is off visiting a cousin or something, so as not to go through the problems of telling Nabiki that Mommy died years ago.

She sees Akane as the 5yr old tag along – and Akane’s behavior doesn’t dissuade her.

Soun after observing 6yr old Nabi-chan for a while is overjoyed at having his sweet Nabiki back again.

Genma sees it as a way of getting Ranma and Nabiki together.

Kasumi tries to straighten Nabiki out but Nabiki won’t have it so Kasumi goes along. - getting into the swing by given Nabi-chan cute bentos and helping her with her hair.

Akane wants her sister to be happy – and welcomes the change. May have them interact more even though Nabi-chan still sees Akane as the tag along.

The fathers insist that Ranma take care of his fiancée after Dr. Tofu says that hitting her over the head would not heal her. It is best that her brain heal itself and that hopefully, in time she would return to being 17 yr old Nabiki, if not the same Nabiki as before.

For his part Ranma feels responsible for her accident and willingly looks after her. Even though the fathers have a mad plan that keeps Nabiki in school even though she is not capable of doing the school work.

By a strange coincidence a local TV station has begun re-running the Magical Domiko anime again. the now mentally 6yr old Nabiki is entranced and watches the show religiously, and since he is there she insists that Ranma watch it with her. Because it was his favorite show too. (When he was 5 or 6) Like most things he doesn't remember it much (until he gets a few episodes in) (the coincidence is canon Nanaka 6/17)

Upon seeing the show Ranma deliberately avoids Nabiki when Ranma-chan as there is an uncanny resemblance between Ranma and Domiko. ( Not just in looks, but in certain ways she acts – this is based on the Nanaka 6/17 Anime and Domiko is not seen much – she tend to be shown at the end of the episodes at the end of her episode {What did you learn today Domiko} only in the penultimate episode of Nanaka do we see more than a snippet of Domiko and then it becomes a dream sequence where Nanaka takes the place of Domiko)

Ranma successfully keeps (on purpose or by chance) Ranma-chan from Nabiki until Ranma-chan has to partner Akane in a Martial arts women’s double tennis match. As usual Ranma figures that if it has “Martial Arts” in its title he can do anything. Ranma-chan has no qualms about taking part until she sees the uniform that she must wear as part of Team Furnikan. To her great chagrin the uniform is virtually the same as magical Domiko’s sailor fuku ( which is actually just a girls’ short skirted school sailor fuku – with no leotard or high hemline) She is wearing the uniform when 6yr old Nabiki sees her and gives her a glomp, excited that her hero Domiko has come to her town, as she promises at the end of every show. Unfortunately they are at the top of a flight of stairs and they both go over. Ranma tries her best to protect Nabiki and does but is knocked silly herself. When she awakes in the nurse’s office a very worried Nabiki is apologizing and calling her Domiko.

Consequently Ranma-chan comes to believe she is Magical Domiko come to visit Nabiki’s town and like Nabiki has become a grown up due to her Magical Domiko Wand. (Domiko is 9 yrs old)

However when splashed with hot water Ranma comes to himself and can remember everything he did as Domiko. Unfortunately when he is splashed with cold water he becomes 9yr old Domiko, who has no memory of being Ranma.

At some point because6yr old Nabiki is enthralled with Domiko, Soun starts buying her all the Magical Domiko accessories including the wand and a talking A.I . robotic version of Domiko’s magical animal advisor Pikoto, which Ranma/ Domiko finds and starts taking advice from. (but only as Domiko – he tries to stay away from it while male - Helpful Nabi-chan keeps bringing it to Ranma-chan/Domiko)

Meanwhile at school 6yr old Nabiki is getting into trouble, because she is so far out of her depth.

Although when Domiko Ranma is also out of her depth, because of “Be a grown-up “ she is able to access what he knows of school work.

The reaction of the other students is mixed the boys really like the “new and improved” Nabiki who is more outgoing and seemingly suggestive (where she is really just innocent). The girls on the other hand dislike the new version who is seemingly going out of her way to steal their boyfriends when she already has the hunk as a fiancé. They didn’t like her before and saw her as a manipulative bitch. Mind you they all see her fascination with Domiko as weird. (save the class otaku – canon Nanaka 6/17)

Follows some of the Nanaka 6/17 story line – Nabiki volunteering to play the piano for the school concert, when she doesn’t know how, but figures if she waves her Magical Domiko Wand and says “Be a pianist” it should be a snap.

Might use Yuriko Amemiya from Nanaka as the class rep and pianist who decides to help (!?) Nabiki out (show her up) .

Kodachi shows up to challenge the Furinkan Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics team, per canon, only it is Magical Domiko “Be a gymnast” who takes her on. Magical Domiko had already met Kodachi and foiled her attack on Furinkan’s team.

Nabi-chan has a couple of adventures with Ranma & Ranma-chan/Domiko then the class goes on its trip to Kyoto and after a moment of panic where she gets lost Nabiki returns to herself temporarily.

When they get home they go to see Dr. Tofu (or an expert who looks a lot like Tofu {just a joke}) who explains that she is suffering from split personality syndrome and that the personalities might merge or one or the other might take over. As for Ranma, the doctor explains he is just trying to hide from the fact that he turns into a girl – with that realization (more than a split second to realize the change ) Ranma starts to stop thinking he is Domiko when he is splashed with cold water.

Nabiki reverts to Nabi-chan (or Na-chan) – As Nabi-chan she volunteers/ is volunteered to write and direct the class play for the cultural festival – staring Domiko - She becomes 17 year old again and writes the play and casts it, with Domiko playing Domiko. Then when inspecting the set she is almost hit by a prop building façade and is scared into becoming Nabi-chan again, Ranma, of course had saved her.

Come the day of the play and Ranma has come down with a cold and can’t change into Domiko( canon flu arc for Ranma) and so Nabi-chan has to go on in her place. Play is a success and all is well.

Then comes the announcement that the last episode of the current re-running of Domiko and Nabi-chan thinks that when the show ends the magic will end and she will revert back to being a 6yr old in a six yr old body and be all alone as she has come to see that Ranma has grown up as has Akane - though she still isn’t quite aware about mommy/Kasumi.

There will be a scene in there about the time of the cultural festival where the curse is explained and that Ranma-chan isn’t Domiko, just that she thought she was. Cue scene of Nabi-chan pouring hot and cold water over Ranma with great delight.

The story ends much like Nanaka with the personalities merging and Nabiki realizing she didn’t need to grow-up so fast and that she really should think about what sort of adult she wants to be.

Ranma too has grown up a bit from having to look after young Nabiki and think too what he thinks about the curse for which there seems no cure, and that he can’t hide from it.

This should be perhaps 15 chapters or so. (Nanaka 6/17 is only 12/13 episodes – only 12 aired).

WOW! I've never seen Nabiki cast in such a role. You definitely have to write it.
And that's the bottom line 'cause Dumbledork said so.

Hell of an original idea.

Tho a bit disturbing in how soun and the others treat Nabiki. Ya i can easly see them doing just that.

Don't make it any less disturbing tho. I don't think Nabiki's going to be to happy with them when/if she's normal.

Ranma getting wound up in all this would be highly amusing to. Considering all the magic and junk that seems to end up in nerima, I would be suprised if other stuff didn't get caught up in this.

Don't forget to include the consequences of Nabiki's hard work with the finances ending up lost because the 6 year old one won't know she was supposed to or how to be doing that. I know it might make things too dynamic but it is something important to consider. The Tendo Dojo can't survive without any income.

Althought I haven't seen (or even heard of) Nanaka 6/17 before now, reading your idea I think it be an excelent story. Going from Ice Queen to child like is something I haven't seen with Nabiki before.

I feel sorry for the Kasumi of this story though being a mother at only nineteen.

Spokovriel- Nabiki managing the Tendo finances is fannon, cannon Soun seems to have a job, although it isn't clear on what it is, I think it is also implied or noted at one point that Nabiki gets allowance and tries to get her allowance increased at some point. Cannon Nabiki is simply greedy. This story seems to have Nabiki more manipulative out of disgust for other people's immaturity and stupidity than greedy.

From what I remember, in the aging mushroom arc (book 33 page 77) it clearing states that he is 16. Well actually it says if he eats the 17 cm mushroom, then he will lose 1 year of life.

However, I like your idea. It should be a good read

Looking at the Anime and how seldom Soun is out of the house I'd say him having a job that involves a steady paycheck is equally fannon.

Good idea JStCP - MCA,

One problem you don't address. Miss 'Obstacles are for Killing' Shampoo. I can't see her stepping aside for Ranma's innocent fiancee. As Nabiki she had cunning, as Na-chan, she'd be totally defenseless.

Ukyo is more easily dealt with, Ranma never calls her cute. She is defeated by Ranma, beats up Genma, and goes away. Of course, Na-chan could be convinced that Ukyo is actually Kasumi 'all grown up' like her and Ranma, but with amnesia. I can imagine Na-chan bringing 'Kasumi' home, after telling her what a pretty girl so grew into.

As an aside, you could have the Sailor Senshi as the advisors (I know it's the wrong timeline, but the fuck with it).

Well he mentions Ranma got curses, it's possible he didn't go to the Amazon village making Shampoo not an issue.

You could always come up with some other trouble between Jusenkyo and the amazon village to get Genma into so that he's not there to wander ahead of Ranma to the prize table and who knows how the amazons would have reacted if it were only Ranma eating at the prize instead of a girl clearly eating it and using it to feed her Giant Panda pet.

Remember that she doesn't even become a fiancee until later in the story. It'd be easy to write her out with a clause of her traditions make it so she can't endanger a woman in Nabiki's condition, or something, and bow out of trying to kill Ranma...

You could also do an ends of the earth catch that the series refused to use. After all the earth ends at the sea. So once Genma and Ranma swam away from China they technically had already been chased to an end of the earth.

This looks pretty interesting, and it looks like you've covered all the angles fairly well. You might even have Shampoo befriend the 6-year-old version of Nabiki. Perhaps (if you use anime characters), this Nabiki reminds her of Ling-Ling and Lung-Lung.
