Ranma's instrument

Postby Crescent Pulsar R » Tue Feb 02, 2010 8:48 am

Here's a little something to share your opinion on. If Ranma decided to pick up a musical instrument (not a blunt one ;p), or had to, and he could choose any instrument, which one do you think he would pick? Use whatever you know of Ranma to come up with something.

Since this just occurred to me, I'll need more time to decide on something, myself. :O

Genma's Daughter has her picking the violin, and makes a good point about the precise body control of the martial artist. Since she was settling down in that book, it worked.

But canon Ranma is still in a place where he can pack his possessions on his back. That suggests a small, inexpensive, sturdy instrument. I'd go with the pennywhistle, or whatever its Japanese equivalent is.

Personally, I think his traveling youth would affect what instument he chooses; the requirements being that it is small, light and low maintenance.
Using those qualifications, I think Ranma would more likely pick up some sort of small wind instument; something along the lines of a flute, which requires control of one's lungs, lips and fingers.

Personally, if I had to pick one aside from the violin (I'll admit that Genma's Daughter has poisoned me on this question because it is an excellent story) I'd go with the flute. For some reason, I think that Ranma would pick up a very precise instrument, and the flute is nothing if not precise. I also like the image of Ranma-chan with a flute, since she's rather dainty and it is a delicate instrument.

But the main reason I think Ranma would pick up the flute over everything else would be that of all the musical instruments, it has the most feminine connotations and that would *really* piss Genma off. Ranma in my mind should be very spiteful towards his/her father.

The other argument would be that he'd get something manly, but I can't really see any "manly" instrument as being anywhere near portable enough for Ranma to have the chance to use. I could see him with an acoustic guitar though.

I can not help but think of the Harmonica, if one wanted a more 'manly' instrument, which is also capable of withstanding the rigors of travel.

Well she, at the time, did pick up a trumpet in the cheerleading martial arts story arc and use its sound as an attack. As for the question, it is dependent on the situation for example if Ranma were to be challenged by someone (or insulted by someone which amounts to the same thing in as far as Ranma is concerned), he is likely to use the very same instrument that the challenger uses (or one considered more difficult to play) because Ranma really likes to beat people at their own game, whenever possible.

Thinking about this I get the image of Ranma using multiple instruments at the same time to show off. Something like playing the drums or a piano with his feet and another instrument with his hands.

If he was playing an instrument to keep from being bored during his training trip I think he would have gone with a flute since wooden ones are cheap, can be made easily, and are not difficult to use as a weapon (he did use a blow dart to take out the principals hot air balloon in one story arc and a flute can be used for this purpose as well as creating annoying loud noises to distract people and you can hit people with them depending on length/thickness can be used as a baton/club).

Though I do like the image of Ranma playing the violin.

Hmmmm... I'm thinking a guitar. There are all kinds of ways to play one. And, in a band, it's possible for a single guitarist to switch between the lead and rhythm roles. And they're also renowned for their solos. When I considered Ranma's personality, that's what came to mind, so i went with that.

Again, for Ranma's life the instrument has to be tough. If it's going to be a stringed instrument, the banjo is probably the toughest. Besides, he'd enjoy playing "Dueling Banjos" at Ryoga.

No one's restricted to that kind of condition. I said "use whatever", not "just what's good for the road" or "what will have a chance to make it out of fights in one piece." Practical, yes, but Ranma may not even be thinking of practical. He could assume that it'd be safe in the bedroom.

Random thought: he'd like a horn of plenty from Cologne (assuming she had one), where food came out whenever it was played. :P

I find it easy to imagine Ranma with a piccolo or a recorder for the road. IIRC, one story had him as the Nerima Nightingale.

Now Ranma and a large pipe organ...

I'm sure Mousse carries around a large organ and the rest of an orchestra around in his socks for use as a last ditch defensive weapon.

I thought his kitchen sink would be the Sydney opera house.

Hey, I know: maracas! Made out of steel and filled with ball bearings, so they can double as clubs. :P

This reminded me of the Kakutou Karuta CD set, where Mousse's 'band' (him, Ranma, Ryouga, IIRC) attempted to do their own rendition of "It's Love." I think Ranma and Ryouga were attempting to play instruments (and the cards might have even showed that), but I don't remember which. Have to find that CD, again (I had one of the non-card versions).
Still alive, but failing miserably at dodging Real Life.

I could see Ranma with a harmonica.
And that's the bottom line 'cause Dumbledork said so.

Naw, that'd be more Kodachi's choice of instrument I think. Ranma disdains weapons.
