Actually,I'd rate both male Kuno's at 4.I'd also rate Mousse as a 3.5,as he does improve over the course of the manga.

Actually, the original essay, while not mentioning Principal Kuno, did put Tatiwaki at a 4, too. I think I may have forgot the times he intentionally did harm to anyone he didn't have a qualm with. Anyone have those points?

I'd also rate Mousse as a 3.5,as he does improve over the course of the manga.

Good point.

One thing I'm wondering though is exactly how much better people Ranma or Akane really are than Ryoga or Ukyo, and if it's really enough to have them all be in different categories?

By the way, anyone have an idea of what sort of ranking Cologne deserves?

AS has been raised in the Kasumi retort, he never starts much violence, but he doesn't do much to end it either. Just because he can fix the agony he puts people through (and it is comedic violence) that doesn't make him a saint.

Although Average Joe makes him a saint by comparison with most of the rest of the cast.

Actually, the only people I could see getting a "1" in the Ranmaverse would be devout Buddhists.

That's true, a charachter needs to be quite an extreme to earn a "1" or a "5". For them to earn that, they need to basically have just about absolutely no good or bad charachter traits, which isn't really very human.

how much better people Ranma or Akane really are than Ryoga or Ukyo

Ranma and Akane don't hold grudges and are fairly forgiving (Ryoga and Ukyo hold grudges for years). Also Ranma and Akane worry about innocent by standards in battles. They also rarely start fights (with each other doesn't count IMO) and have on several occasions tried to not fight/stop fighting (Ranma tried to talk with instead of fight with Ryoga, Ukyo, Mouse at one point, and Shampoo, Akane tried to stop fights when Ranma fought with both Ryoga and Mouse). They also show more guilt for their actions (Ukyo never showed any guilt for endangering innocent by-standards). Neither Ranma or Akane would attack Nabiki physically where as Ukyo did.

Would you consider the difference extreme enough for either of them to be a 4, or at least something inbetween like the 3.5?

4 implies that you are willing to hurt people you have no grudge with, such as something involving innocent bystanders, not so much the holding vicious grudges wich is what someone in the 3 range would do.

Neither Ranma or Akane would attack Nabiki physically where as Ukyo did.

Yep, that was scummy. Even if she didn't actually try to kill her in the end, the simple fact that she actually sent a formal challenge letter to Nabiki, who she knew didn't fight I consider quite dishonerable. That alone would have made me consider giving her a 4 if it wasn't for the fact that she seemed well aware already of Nabiki's reputation.

Not that Ryoga has a clean slate, but at least he feels guilt.

I still say that they both overall get a 3, but closer to a 4 than a 2.

I don't know where I'd Rank them but I'd say that both Ryoga and Ukyo are some what worse than Ranma and Akane (Ryoga is getting better though he'll eventually if things continue be in the same category as Ranma and Akane). Ukyo is worse than Ryoga. Since Ukyo is shown to not feel guilt for endangering innocents (Ryoga felt guilt and stopped using his bandanna attack for that reason) and will hurt people that she has no real grudge against for personal gain (Nabiki).

In that case, if she does hurt innocents and does not feel guilt, sounds to me that a 4 she gets. Not quite as avid as Shampoo or Happosai, though.

A significant number of Akane's Uglies on her GBU chart stem from her not apologizing (or even considering that she might owe an apology) to Ranma for stuff she did to him (Such as pouring cold water on his male form when she knew Shampoo would try to kill female Ranma on sight). I counted four counts of this, and at least four more counts of attacking Ranma without giving him a chance to explain at all. This totals a full sixth of her inexcusable actions (Which is more inexcusable actions than Ukyo does total in the entire manga).

I think that takes Akane up to a 3.5 minimum.

I won't argue the ratings anyone is going to give, but if you're going to use GBU lists to compare the two keep in mind that I do... still believe that she deserved an Ugly rating for both of the times she caused innocent bystanders to get hurt/almost get hurt in the introduction. At least, if Mousse or early Manga Ryoga are going to get a 4 just because of their fights where they do the same thing.

I'll just say that they're both at 3.5, maybe close to 4, and let other people discuss which one they think it is, although I hope this site doesn't degrade into a thread completely about them alone.

I'm just wondering out of curiousity what people think Cologne should be rated. Part of me wants to say 4, but I'm aware that she in general never did anything particularly hurtful to Ranma, just underhanded. Although the cat-fist is probably close.

And if I'm right, wasn't she willing to kill off Akane for being in the way during the final fight at the last pheonix pill fight? I'd add a link to the page she does it on but it doesn't work on the computer I'm using now.

Actually,I'd rate Ukyo,Shampoo and Kodachi as 4s,and Akane as a 3.
I'd rate Cologne as a 3.5.

I do agree that the 5 rating may be slightly high for Kodachi, but I remember the two points particularly mentioned that bring her up to a 5 being a) feeding Kuno to an alligator b) trying to kill all the boys at the amusement park during the Asuka arc because one of them was her rival's boyfriend. Those are listed as lows supposedly Ukyo or Shampoo would never reach.

Cologne a 3.5? Funny, I can't really see her hell bent on revenge?

But as a question asked before, why do you feel Tatiwaki should be a 4 rather than a 3?

Because I consider Tatekawai a bully and would-be rapist. He always thinks that whatever he does is honorable because "he's a noble samurai".To paraphrase Edna Mode,however-
"NOBLE SAMURAI?HAH!THERE'S NOTHING NOBLE ABOUT HIM!"
As for Cologne, she only gets a 3.5 because she sometimes helped out Ranma.Otherwise she would have got a 4,same as Shampoo.
