Wes Craven's My Soul To Take

Postby MovieBrat » Thu Aug 26, 2010 7:32 pm

*gasp* A Non-Godzilla thread? Nah, just kidding. Just kidding.

In all seriousness, this thread is for Wes Craven's latest film My Soul to Take. Like Nightmare on Elm Street and Shocker before it, it has a supernatural serial killer. It's the first film since New Nightmare he wrote and directed himself. Here's the trailer, any thoughts guys?

I think Wes got pissed at the new Nightmare on Elmstreet Remake and decided to make a new slasher based on every single thing about Fready that they forgot to include in that abused tortured distorted alteration of his original movie.

After all that prayer was central to inspiring the defense against Fready.

I personally think that the dead man's soul is linked to all the children born on that night and he might have to kill them all to gain either resurrection or his rest in damnation.

Edit: Think of it like a reverse situation of Voldemort's Horocruxes each of the children born that night are anchors for his soul and if he wants to move on he's got to break/destroy the anchors.

First of all, it's spelled Freddy not Fready. Sorry.

Second, actually from what I gathered, Wes isn't pissed nor is he cool with the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. He seems nuetral about it and wished the filmmakers good luck.

Interesting observation about what the killer is doing, never thought of it that way. Think that's the idea?

I figured it would be a fun motivation but its just a guess. I know I spelled Freddy wrong but in my defense there I'm having trouble thinking from the temp spending nearly 5 hours today up above 95 degrees. I have trouble above 85.

Edit: More specifically today I started having trouble breathing when it hit 93 today.

Oh. Sorry, I didn't know. My apologies.

But you know, Wes seems to like creating supernatural serial killers.

He also seems to love creating dynamic characters. Freddy might have been a "Filthy child murderer" but between the original Nightmare on Elm and Wes Craven's New Nightmare allot can be clearly seen about the character that is completely ignored to make him a rapist in the new movie. And what happened to the attitude and fun that Robert Englund couldn't avoid adding to the character as he messed with the victims heads taking advantage of what freaks them out in the dream setting. That all seemed to be missing to me.

But that's not the movie you linked to a trailer for. But think about this. The kids were born the night he died that is a clear fact of the new movie. Why and how could he interpret going after them as revenge against anyone?

Sure its a fitting misdirection but its not quite right where the only ones seen dieing appear to be kids in that group. Now if they showed others dieing perhaps ones who are older than those kids that might make sense he was after the people that killed him through the kids. But it doesn't quite fit what was shown.

Maybe as revenge and a way to resurrect himself like you said?

Revenge is what the trailer says but its hard to see how. That is why I tried to imagine something else like possessing the children to use their bodies to try to resurrect himself or the whole soul anchor alternative possibility to make sense of those kids being killed.

If posession's the idea, does that mean he's possesing one of the protagonists?

Also aside from that, any thoughts on the trailer itself?

The Trailer was great it gave quite a few visual hints without giving away allot about the killer other than he exists and moves fast. It might have given away a bit too much of the kids speculations but to be sure on that I'd have to see the movie. And really with the teases it gives it achieves making me want to see the movie so overall its a great trailer even if it does possibly say a little too much.

To me, it looks good and I'm interested in where Wes Craven is going with it. Like the song choice in the trailer.
