Professional Fiction

Postby Comartemis » Sat Jan 12, 2008 12:31 am

Alright ladies and gents, listen up. I'm bored. And as anyone who's been into spamville recently can tell you, nasty things happen when I get bored. Ice cream starts disappearing, for one.

I want to read some fanfics I haven't read before, but I don't want to read just any fanfic. No, what I want is the most well-written fanfics any of you have ever laid hands on. Now before you start posting all your favorite titles, stop and think for a minute. I'm not asking for "the best" fanfics around, I want the most well-written. Stories that have you convinced that the author could easily charge people for them if we didn't have copywrite laws.

I want stories like The Return (I may not like it at all, but damned if it isn't well-written). I want Neon Exodus Evangelion (And I will continue to argue that DJ Croft is one of the things that makes that series great). I want Team 8 and Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Future's Past, both by S'tarkan. I want "Through Troubled Waters", by our very own Akuma-sama. I want the collected works of Black Dragon. I want Progeny. They can be any series and by any author, but they must be of professional quality! Now get to work!

Here's a few more, coming off the top of my head:
Reflections of Ruin by P.H. Wise
Ranma/Sailor Moon

The Brooch by jasonulloa
Sailor Moon

Legacy of the Rasengan, by Tellemicus Sundance
Naruto

A Tale of Two Wallets by Shiva-kun

Naruto

Scars, by Estrea
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha

Tales of the Foxcat, by Ozzallos

ranma, I know practically everybody would know this story, still I had to add it.

I cant really think of many others, I have a lot of faverout stories but I'm not sure how well they quallify as well written. I'll add them anyway.

Fist of the Moon by Penguin-sa
Ranma/sailor moon

Usagi-Hasano or KonokoHasano
I think this persons stories are great, um at least I think there well written, I dunno.

Ok this might not be to everybody's taste but the story is EPIC.

Shinji and Warhammer40k. By Bluepencil aka Charles Bhepin
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3886999/1/S ... rhammer40k
The scope of this is incredible.

And while this is original fiction I like it and think it should be mentioned here
http://sennadar.plebian.net/
All the stories are by Fel. There are eight stories in the 'Kael Chronicles' and a couple others. While the main protagonist comes across as whiny in some ways I really like the stories nonetheless for their scope and bringing worlds to life.

Since most of the good Ranma1/2 ones have been listed... How do you feel about Stargate:Atlantis fanfiction?

Ardhanarishvara, in 26 parts, in progress. contains m/f and f/m genderbending and numerous sexual situations. But it is exceptionally well written. The only sticking point is some pronoun issues... that tend to go with stories where main characters are suddenly the opposite sex. Summary: The team visits the planet of sex-changes, Hermea. Converses many serious issues actually found in life and when relationships go to more than just friend... Plus there's much action.

How about Hellsing or Ah! My Goddess works?

Well. I have this hobby: bookbinding. Actually, the hobby started out as publishing, and expanded. But I want to get something besides a blank book out of the endeavour. So when I find a fanfic that I consider truly worth re-reading, I print and bind it. This involves many hours of work - proofreading, copy-editing, typesetting - before I even get to the binding part. If the story irretrievably honks me off anywhere in all that, it gets set aside and not bound.

Here are the survivors of a rigorous process of making me happy enough to do all that work:

Genma's Daughter and Equal Halves by Deborah Goldsmith
Cast a Second Line Into the Sea by Sinom Bre
Clothes Make The ... by Nightelf et al
Roses of Shadow by Richard Lawson
Ryoko Saotome by Thrythlind (Luke Green)
Ranma and Akane: A Love Story by Eric Hallstrom (first story arc)
Dangerous Curves by Erica Friedman and Sparkle
Spring of Drowned Tigger by Gregg Sharp (Metroanime) (excerpted from a large omake file)

There are other stories waiting in the queue:
Chaotic Future by Cloud Dreamer
Destiny's Child by Fire
Happily Married by Kirinin

The main point here is that these are all finished. Finished work is, after all, an important criterion of the professional. And of course, when I finish Different Colors I'll bind it.

You may note that I've linked to the authors instead of the fiction. Makes sense - if they write well, they'll write it all well. That's the hope, anyway.

If any of you happen to know Eric Hallstrom, or Metroanime, tell them to get in touch with me. There are books waiting for them.

Good and evil are a lot alike the counsel wars. Ware free will is like the 360 in that ever one has it, Good is like Wii because ever one wants to have, or be it, and evil is like the PS3 because they try to get every one to join them but rely their just trying to them selves justify it to them selves by trying to get you.

Hmm, professional fiction eh? Well, this one's not finished, but it is one of the best written and most emotional stories I've ever read:

The Moment It Began, a Harry Potter fanfic by Sindie.

This fic was written in response to a coment from JKR that, if given the chance to relive his life, Snape would choose Lily over the Death Eaters. This isn't an instant 'redeemed Snape' thing either; upon finding himself attending Hogwarts and once again living with his abusive father, he actually falls back into his old behavior patterns at first. He has to struggle to change himself, and his circumstances, every step of the way, and even then, none of his old problems recieve a 'quick fix' and he finds himself with a slew of new ones. This is one of the most AU fics I've ever read, as it's doubtful whether Harry Potter will ever even be born in this fic!

One excellent tale of sacrifice on the part of Severus Snape, on behalf of his Slytherins (no pairings):

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2470334/1/T ... ay_Present

Now, there's parts I don't enjoy, but I just skip over them, and it's very much worth the read - warning, it can be quite sad.

Most of the great Ranma stories have already been mentioned, aside from Relatively Absent:
http://gaijinsrealm.com/relabs/index.shtml

The other very good ones aren't quite as well written, by and large.

Time for Atlan to recomend (as usual) The Shadow Chronicles!

The Banana, the Atheist's Nightmare:

God made it with a non-slip surface, a color coded system so we know when to eat it, and an easy open tab at the top of the banana. It's just the right shape for a mouth and is easy to digest!!
