Nodoka... The protagonist!

Postby Crescent Pulsar » Sun Mar 01, 2009 9:24 am

I just started writing a story where Nodoka is the protagonist, and it got me thinking. I didn't find many stories, five-plus years ago, where she had such a role. And many that I found were either alternate universes, made her really OOC, or both. (Not exactly what I'm interested in.)

So, what's the situation after five years? Have any more been written? Are any of them considered to be decent? What's out there?

IMO, she's a really hard character to turn into a protagonist without making her OC or OOC.

That said, I've seen a number of stories where she's a bit OOC and a supporting character, but not the main character.

Overall... I would agree with Ordieth117. Canon Nodoka as a protagonist would be hard to accept without changes to the character. To go from as she comes across in canon as vs. what you seem to want.

I can see such a change, but it normally would be a divergence early on and a big change to character.

For example, several come to mind with Genma dying and Nodoka out of some sense of honor taking Ranma on the training trip instead. She becomes a completely different person as a result.

RANMA 'A Little Motherly Love' by Celeste Byrd - [Status=Not Complete] - [Last Dld=03/17/2002] - [Size=199kb]RANMA 'Chaotic Neutral' by Ozzallos-TeflonBooger - [Status=Single File] - [Last Dld=03/28/2008] - [Size=90kb]
Likewise, in others, she is obsessed with finding Ranma, leading her to do different things during those 10 years not in canon, she becomes a protagonist, but the stories are not generally centered on her. She does that in:

RANMA 'When you wish upon a sword' by Metroanime - [Status=Complete] - [Last Dld=12/11/2002] - [Size=164kb]R-SM 'Princess of the Moon' by C Rose - [Status=Not Complete] - [Last Dld=01/21/2007] - [Size=1741kb]R-SM 'The Return' by Josh Temple - [Status=Not Complete] - [Last Dld=10/18/2008] - [Size=2692kb]
A couple that might fit is her taking a broken Ranma under her wing to train him in the discrepancies caused by Genma. She does that in:

RANMA 'Out of Time' by Trimatter - [Status=Not Complete] - [Last Dld=12/25/2007] - [Size=432kb]R-SM 'No Chance for Fate' by Tribun - [Status=Not Complete] - [Last Dld=01/22/2009] - [Size=200kb]
Another more supportive role might be as she is in:

RANMA 'Only You' by Tsunami-Saotome - [Status=Not Complete] - [Last Dld=11/05/2005] - [Size=307kb]

What is the story you are reading? So we can get a better feel of what exactly it is you are looking for.

(I recognize many of those stories. I think. Memory's a bit hazy. ;/)

I'm writing one. It picks up some months after the end of the series, and is partly an experiment in her thought processes without being too OOC. That's my intent, at least.

Basically, I'm not really looking for any particular type of story. Any will do, so long as Nodoka is the protagonist. And I'd prefer they be less than five years old, if possible. I'm just curious about what other authors have done with Nodoka lately, and whether or not things have changed much or not.

Hmmm... At least 5 of those are under 5 years old for last update or downlaod by me... And of those, 3 did not even exist at all that far back.

Whoops. "Many" can sound deceiving. I think my math skills failed. ^^; I took a look at them and I'm pretty sure I read four of them (of what was available at the time), back in the day. I don't know if half can be considered "many" out of eight. <_<;

Those stories being:

A little motherly love
When you wish upon a sword
Princess of the moon
The Return

So I guess that leaves four new ones since I stopped reading fan-fiction. I'll have to take a peek at them to get a better idea of what the authors did with Nodoka.

(Wasn't Celeste Byrd the author that died? Or is my memory spazzing out on me, again?)

Yes, Celeste passed away several years ago after fighting illness for a long time. More recently was White Wolf, the person who created anifics.com and the anime/manga fan fiction mailing list. His passing threw a number of things into chaos.
