A Star Trek/Fan based ship fanfiction story search

Postby PCHeintz72 » Mon Jun 07, 2010 6:27 pm

I've been tempted for quite some time to make this request, but have been uncertain I should.

I'm a long time Star Trek fan, far longer of one even than I've been of anime.

There are tons of Star Trek fan fiction stories centered on the crew of either a canon cast (TOS, TNG, DS9, ENT, VOY, 2009), or at least a well known canon ship design (Constitution, Galaxy, Defiant, Excelsior, Intrepid, Ambassador, etc...).

But many may not know there are tons and tons of ship designs out there that are Star Fleet designs made by fans that are really well thought out.

Some examples of IMHO some good well thought out ship designs:

- Hubble Exploratory Cruiser - ASDB.NET Web Site - Star Fleet Prototype document
- Crusader Light/Fast Cruiser - ASDB.NET Web Site - Star Fleet Prototype document
- Andromeda Medium Cruiser/Heavy Scout - Advanced Starship Design Bureau Web Site
- Volantis Heavy Cruiser - Journal of Applied Treknology Web Site
- Frontier Heavy Cruiser - ASDB.NET Web Site - Star Fleet Prototype document
- Rigel Heavy Cruiser - Journal of Applied Treknology Web Site
- Atlanta Large Exploratory Cruiser - Journal of Applied Treknology Web Site
- Sullivans Strategic Frigate - ASDB.NET Web Site - Ships of the Star Fleet Volume 2 - Patrol Combatants
- Miskatonic Surveyor (designation as Surveyor is my own, uncertain of actual type, ut right size and looks for it) - Mateen Greenway's Home Page
- Galactica Battlestar Command Ship - U.S.S. Galactica - (A project redoing the BSG Galactica using Star Trek science) Battlestar Class thread on Scifi-Meshes Web Site

Heck or even a canon ship only seen for a few miinutes or moments on screen, such as:

- Ju'Day Maquis Raider (often mistaken as a Peregrine fighter, which is *much* smaller) - Maquis Forces International

Sites used for some of the examples:

Advanced Starship Design Bureau Web SiteASDB.NETMateen's 3D GraphicsStarship Schematics DatabaseScifi-Meshes.com - The Front PageMaquis Forces International - Maquis Raider
Anyone know of much in the way of stories for any of them, or those like them? Generally, the more technically oriented, the more I am likely to enjoy reading it.

BTW... I have read 'Proud Legion' by bsmart-Tiek Mo Shet (wish he would update), and also 'The Goddess Dilemma' by Driver Jim Ohki.

Also... for those wondering, there is at least one good Star Wars site that does something similar to the above Star Trek sites with canon ships from all continuities... it is:

STAR WARS Technical Commentaries

I'm sorry to say I can't find anything. I had talked about some things along these lines with friends over at leovilletownsquare back when I frequented there but the project never got to an actual story just lots of outlines and setting ideas. Some crew selection ideas tossed around.

Well... thanks for responding anyway. This is normal for my search requests though.

One person on TFF did suggest I try this request at Spacebattles.com, but I'm not on that forum, nor do I intend to be.

Oddly, I myself *way* back in high school and early college wrote two such stories. Both those stories had unique ships in it. They have never been published on the internet. To date those are the only fan fiction stories I have ever written outside one tiny snippet at TFF involving Akane beating up Yggradsil like the Russian in Armageddon.

It just struck as odd to me the star trek fan fiction I have read almost exclusively will use either a canon crew or a canon ship design.

Shrugs... oh well.

Do you remember the thread for space ships that was made in the Other talk board?

Tint'Elen my ship I use in Spamville was created to be a quick response technical team shuttle. Star Ships can't be everywhere. And not every member world can be guaranteed having full time Federation Engineers. So that little warp vessel was my idea for how to ensure the Federation's technological infrastructure.
It has one non cannon aspect though. The TIE engine styles taken from the Milennium Falcon used for the sub light engines. Kinda like Allen was working on a ship design that separates into 3 parts and its nacelles deploy into an X-Wing configuration. But it is still around the scale of a galaxy class starship.

The stories just never really got fleshed out into actually being stories.

Edit: Turns out that the other post lost the images so I had to do an edit there. But here is the info for Tint'Elen in that thread.

Hmmm... never saw that thread, or at least do not remember it. Centrainly not the ship.

In any case, for small in system defense depending upon how big you wish the ship to be, the Ferderation in canon ships has a couple that could fill the bill:

- Peregrine B aka Ju'day Escort/Freighter class (Chakotay's in Voyager before it was destroyed) ships could do it at 60m long, crew of 10, with room on deck 2 for troops or special cargo or more crew, some fanon deck layouts (no deck layout ever shown) allow for detention cells and troop transport. Rear torpedo tubes, and front phasers. Max Warp 6+. Interestingly enough, this is I'm to understand technically *not* a Starfleet craft, but a Federation one... It is a minor distiction, but an interesting one. If true, it would explain why it does not exactly fit the norm for a Starfleet design. These could be modified to transport engineers and parts I suppose, since it is designed already to double as a small freighter.

- Peregrine C aka Strike Fighter aka Anteres class is a slightly smaller version of Ju'day class, this was shown briefly in canon in a Next Generation Episode with Ensign Ro Lauren.

Non-Canon I've seen a few ships that could do the job.

- Xenon/Prevaricate Escort classes would likely be the best bet. At some 30+ meters long and wide, it is actually a mini version of the Defiant, or sort of a super runabout. Overpowered for it's size. Classed as a Escort, same as Defiant's official classification in canon. Cheap and powerful.

- Bearclaw Cutter, 45m long. Designer made 2 versions, one for TMP and one for TNG eras.

For Federation corps of engineers and mobile repair and what not. There are three known solutions that while none are canon (Star Trek never covered any such aspect in series that I am aware of), both are common fannon.

- The single best solutions I've seen is a a Heavy Cargo Tug/transport carrying two to six specialized container pods... ones for supply, ones for ship tender efforts, can have ones for bulk transport or even shuttle carriers, even seen one type that could be a mobile drydock. The transporting ship can be armed for defense, but also altered to carry these container pods. Several versions of these ships exist in fanon. A Brownwood (235m) Class Transport Tug (modified Reliant/Miranda/Avenger class). A Anaxagoras (387m) Class Transport Tug (A sort of Excelsior version of a Reliant, larger than it is though). And a Yorkshire Class Transport Tug (this is deceptive in size, but I estimate at 555m based on images I've seen). Advantage is the pods can be left behind, or can be released and the ship fight off or draw off an enemy. The pods are large, and generic, can be easily produced, likewise they do not need a dedicated ship, but can be switched off to other ships easily.

- The second solution would be a dedicated ship tender. The Fabrux Class would be an example, small, fast, can tow, resupply, or repair on scene. Yet well armed. Some 238m long and a crew of 120 and a max speed of warp 8. This is ok.

- The third solution is a Macphearson transport. This is sort of a dedicated cargo/non combat version of a Galaxy or Nebula class. Personally, I think it a waste of a large design ship, but a lot of fans seem to like it.

I just double checked when DS9 came out and that was 1993. My first design sketches for Tint'Elen on graph paper I drew in 1989. Just didn't post anything for it online and couldn't really in the 90's because at that time I was spending time in psychiatric facilities. Those images are basically redrawings that I made a soon as I could with MS Paint in Windows 3.11. Only reason I didn't in Mac Paint was because I didn't have enough time with the computer when in the earlier mentioned facilities.
