Fukufics Wiki: Editing

Just made an account on the Fukufics Wiki but nothing is editable. I'm assuming one of three things is happening:

- the wiki is on lockdown and no one can edit but admin/mods
- an admin/mod needs to approve editing rights to block spam bots and graffiti
- the settings for new accounts on the wiki are not properly set up

It's s mix of the first two.

Edit rights are basically staff only. There have been a couple volunteers that have gotten edit access.

So... it's not a wiki then, as people can't go in there and improve bad pages. :|

It really shouldn't be called a wiki, despite the back end... or name. ^^;

I at least never considered it such. Do not misunderstand it is a good site... though I've only 2 such links to pages on it. But not perfect, in the past I've seen some information that does not match my own memories, though I never bothered to remember what pages they were.

Even given that it is an incredible resource, and I can tell a lot of good time and manhours and serious love went into it.

Personally though, I dislike the idea of open editing on any site. the dangers of getting someone in whom could kill off selective parts were a meltdown to occur.

The early days of Wikipedia proved how easy it is for misinformation to be posted, even inadvertent misinformation.

Thanks!

You're right about the risk factor.

Having anyone edit privileges never seemed necessary and not worth the risk.
And if not risk the increased time spent checking the list for bad edits.

Agreed. That's why I disabled open registrations for this forum. If there are open editing and posting rights on a web site, it's guaranteed that scammers and spammers will take advantage of it by having bots scan for and break into the system. I don't want to see one of our sites serving up malware or used as a home for thievery.

If you'd like to work with any of the stories or posts on the "wiki" site, nothing is stopping you from asking Sunny for permission.

What about adding a suggestion box of sorts so people could still submit possible page updates for the Wiki. Just to make it so no one has to know everything to keep it up to date?

I know going through the submissions could still become a hassle but at least then people with good information wouldn't have to sit frustrated that they have nothing they can do with it.

In that case, I don't see why we can't just open a new forum topic for it here. After all, everyone already has the permissions needed to post as they please on this site. No need to duplicate it in the wiki.

What do you think, Sunny? Want to do it that way?

What would it require? A link to the Wiki page is a definite must and maybe copying the name in the topic? To make it harder for people to make a mistake and do multiple threads for update suggestions on the same page?

Yeah I'd think a forum topic would be best. No need to muck with the wiki itself.

(nods) Yes, the topic would have to be labeled with the name of the story, and yes, a link to the page in question is a must. So, looks like we'll do it this way.

Now... What the heck to call the category? Name suggestions, anyone?

How about "Wikiworks" since it will be a place for suggestions to work on the Wiki?

Oh, and should it be a top level category, or a subcategory of Creative?

I really think that should be up to the Admins of the Wiki and the forum. So long as its easy to keep it clear what it is for would it make much difference where it goes?
