They remind me of Akane, and the Kunos in a bad way.

I'd say Akane and the Kuno's are far worse. The Outers (most obviously Haruka and Michiru as well as Setsuna, but also Hotaru in her own way) are willing to go pretty far in their own ways to accomplish what they want which is generally in the interest of the world. Akane will just hurt people for whatever reason she thinks is justified and never admit she's in the wrong and the Kuno's do pretty much the same.

Well, at that point it was obvious enough that they were examining them for something, and that it was probable that they'd need to keep said crystal if they found it, thus killing the person.
Really, the specifics of their quest would have meant little to Usagi - it didn't change her behaviour afterward, so why would it have done so earlier?
However, Usagi apparently decided that letting them look at Unazuki's crystal and confirm whether or not they even needed to fight over it took a back seat to keeping it away from them. Because of that, the Outers needed to expend precious time beating her and Mamoru so that they could look at the crystal, confirm it wasn't what they were looking for, and toss it back to them.

I don't actually get to say this often, but I think Usagi was acting in a smart way there. Yes, gasp in amazement. If Michiru and Haruka were examining the heart crystals and would've taken them if it was what they wanted, they would not likely stick around to tell the Inner senshi they're taking it and to fight them for it. Haruka and Michiru would just be likely to either do whatever they need with it or run off with it, possibly leaving the Inner senshi with the monster if there's one there still to slow them down from chasing after them and the victim dying slowly.

Chaos was lieing. We know that Galaxia was really Chibi-Chibi in the anime.

She was both - CC was her soul, Chaos was busily corrupting her mind and body.

But she could have held onto it and let them look. If that were the case, they would definitely not be able to disengage quickly enough.
It was that or keep fighting and risking Unazuki's life - the only reason she survived that was because the Outers beat Usagi and her boytoy quickly enough. In other words, because her plan failed.
I dunno, but it seems to me that when it takes my opponent winning to secure my objective, it would be a failure in planning. I mean, how was she planning to get away and get the Crystal back to Unazuki?

Generally you don't trust people who will steal something vital to someones continued life to get near enough to steal the thing. Under the pretense of looking, or even after looking and confirming she could proberly grab it and run. Uranus usually attacks more physically so you could proberly assume she's stronger physically.
You could also say the objective was only fulfilled because it wasn't a tailisman. It was doomed either way, it was either give it to them, or at least attempt to resist and have some chance to break away and return it. Letting them look at it at all is risking Unazuki's life incase they decide they want to keep it.

However, if Mars hadn't been chanting over Unazuki, even that luck wouldn't have been enough, because Unazuki probably would've died before the Outers could overcome Usagi's meager resistance.

You really missunders stood the scene. Uranus and Neptune where going almost all out agenst Moony and Tuxy. Moony and Tuxy held back because they didn't want to hurt/mame/kill Uranus or Neptune.

Prove it. Prove that Moon and Tux were honestly taking the lives of their opponents more seriously than the life of their dying friend.
If it was true, then that proves my point even more - she was choosing to take her sweet time in the fight even with Unazuki's five-minute lifespan, being unforgivably careless with Unazuki, even more so than U/N, who were ready to kill her.
None of them used magical attacks, true - but that wasn't a sign of holding back, that was because you'd fry the crystal in the crossfire and everyone loses.

Notice how it says that she used the crystal to unfreeze the planet and its people. It also says that she tried to purify everyone on earth. The question is, what exactly was meant by "Purify"?

I always favored the interpretation that 'purify' was best seen in light of the idea of The Fall, and meant a return of humankind to a sinless, unfallen state (once more unfallen, but also once more free to fall from grace).
It doesn't mean that they *can't* do evil, just that it no longer comes naturally, and goodness *does.*

It is a Christian religious reference, but it is also a mighty matter of myth and legend. The Fall of Man, simply put, refers to humanity's fall from a state of innocent bliss to a state of sinful understanding.
The idea here is that Serenity, in purifying humanity, returned humanity to their state of blissful innocence, though they are still free to commit evil if they so choose and fall a second time.
