At the very least Haruka knows a bit of Judo, and she was good enough to best Makoto when they sparred. Exactly how much time, effort and interest she puts into martial arts isn't clear, but I think it's safe to say that her ability is no less than what someone would get out of self-defense training; anything more than that would probably be more questionable and require some explanation.

Huh... thought so.

I saw her more of a lover than a fighter anyway. :P

I'm still unsure about Hotaru, why was everyone trying to kill her? I know her being alive means the end of the world, but, seriously?

Haruka is often considered the best of the senshi when it comes to hand to hand, with only Makoto being close.
I can´t recall if there´s ever been much of an exact answer on just how much that "some" really is, but i would not call her a "dedicated martial artist" or anything. Decent/high level amateur is the impression i´ve gotten. Ie, maybe a black belt in something?

Calling her "not a fighter", yeah that sounds VERY odd, she´s possibly THE most "fighter-y" of the senshi.

In Venezuela it counted quite a lot. Replacing a bunch of corrupt "ruling elite rich boys" with Chavez was quite a big hit among the big chunk of poor and opressed people. As long as he can manage to improve things at least a little now and then, Chavez doesn´t need to rig any elections.
What there has been in election fraud there so far seems to have mostly cancelled each other out, although the rich kids outright buying votes seems to be a bit more in appearance than anything else.

Seriously.

Think about it. Not only do they have to concern themselves with an enemy trying to take over the world, but one of their own going a step or two beyond that. Between the two problems, the worst is the clearest in sight and possibly the easiest to take care of. Aside from the fact that she was supposed to be sealed away to begin with, and for a reason, it's not like her death would have been permanent. No matter how you look at it, however cruel it seems to kill her it's very practical and even tactically sound.

I don't recall if events end the same for the third story arc for the anime and manga, but in the manga even Sailor Moon's efforts to save the world and not have to sacrifice Hotaru was for naught. Not that it was necessary, since Pluto helped to change where ground zero would be and Saturn's power allowed her to be reborn.

Speaking of Pluto, I'm still confused on how old Setsuna is. she only as old as she looks or is she just reincarnated... arhhhghh! My head!

Setsuna doesn't reincarnate until after she dies from the time stop she does to help others get their shot against Mistress 9. She was alive since the Silver Millennium.

When and why she stops time differs between the anime and manga, though. Something to keep in mind. However, the Pluto that eventually joins the group rather than guard the Door of Time is a reincarnation. It's the other details about her existence that's a bit muddled.

Yeah...

Ok, the attacks, do they HAVE to be shouted? Cuz if not, its incredibly... stupid.

Pluto whispers hers but well it took thousands of years of practice with it to keep it from impacting the power of the effect not actually shouting it. I read that in an author interview.

...

So, unless you practice it a ton, the loudness of saying it affects the intensity of the attack?

That wasn't a smart design, whoever designed these powers. More like power limiters.

That's news to me. And even if it's true, it was never given canonical significance. As in: it was never mentioned in canon.

And, again, it's different between the anime and the manga. She only whispers in the anime.

As for shouting being necessary? Probably not. I think that's more for the sake of the mediums used and as a part of said mediums which hope to make money.

It is still astronomically stupid to design these powers with a condition that it has to be said at all.

I need to know this because Akane in this fic wants be be special so bad that she tries to get inspiration from mass media, including Lucky Star and Haruhi.

She WILL question the why of these things when the attacks start getting better. I need an answer that can be said.

These things just exist. Why use a certain language? Why certain hand gestures? Why when the celestial objects are aligned?

However, I think I can provide a decent reason/explanation for why shouting might be necessary and/or helpful, and it even has a martial arts connection. First, check out kotodama. You'll eventually see its connection to kiai. The idea is that -- in some form or another -- shouting at some point before, during or after something is beneficial for whatever one is trying to accomplish.

Sure, but then your enemy knows that something is coming and can DODGE! For defenders of a queendom, that seems really, really not smart.

Yes, its an anime thing, but, someone smart (Ami) should have realized it was dangerous to keep doing that and try to find a way around it.

Look at it this way: people use guns despite how loud they are, yet not only are they still heavily-relied upon but they can still get the job done. Think of it as being a double-edged sword. And would you rather have something with a drawback, or something a Mary Sue character would be delighted to use? Sometimes you just have to accept the bad with the good.
