Most of all, i'm just shocked they could buy such a property for so cheap. I mean, neighbouring on Tokyo(relatively), a midsized house(no matter how rundown) and a miniature river? You couldn't get it at that price even without the house anywhere within 100km of a city here. More like triple the pricetag, minimum.

I may be wrong, but I think there is a surplus of countryside dwellings, what with shrinking population and people flowing to the towns and cities. Mind, it will almost certainly need a complete rebuild, but they will hopefully have a place to cool down, have fun and re-enact a few anime scenes.

Sure, but still, i mean that kind of pricetag is around the value of a family summerhouse place i've been to, and that's way out in the nowhere, not a good location, a tiny 35sqm house without water or plumbing and most definitely not a stream and a waterfall on the property... Even a house in terrible disrepair still has value and while it looked like crap from outside, there was still a lot of solid stuff on the inside, so not a complete wreck either.

Basically, if i transplanted the house and the stream to the above summerhouse, despite being out in the backed of nowhere, with powerlines passing by just outside one corner of the 1k sqm property, it would probably cost 5 times as much or more.
Heck, the closest i can think of to compare would be the summerhouse of a friend of mine's parents, whose location is less than an hour from Stockholm rather than the over 3 hours of the previously mentioned, and is close to the sea instead of having its own stream, and it's estimated value is something like 6M SEK, ie something closer to >700k$. Even if you utterly destroyed the house there and made the location worse, it still wouldn't sell for less than 10 times the pricetag in the article.

And with Japan in general being a very expensive country, well, definitely a big surprise.
