A lot has been said about how Japanese children often commute to school by themselves at an early age.

This touches on something that i must say i'm just weirded out by. Nowadays, kids apparently are generally unable to walk/whatever on their own to school. When i was a kid, i can count the number of times i had someone with me or was given a lift on my fingers and have leftovers to spare.
Just, WHY?
