Ranma "Classics"

Postby Cyber_Skaarj » Sun Apr 30, 2006 4:31 pm

What Ranma fics do you consider to be classic fanfiction? I'm looking for fics that stand a cut above the rest, both in terms of storytelling and grammar & spelling (the latter two - or lack thereof - being a personal gripe of mine in a lot of fanfiction).
Include links to the most recently updated versions of the fics if at all possible.
To start, i'll give a few examples of fics I consider to be amoung the best:
One War, Three Sisters by Nighthawke (Ranma/Starcraft cross)
Girl Days and Paragon by Kenko (the latter being a Ranma/SM cross)
The Best of Times, Ah! My Ranma One Half! and Exact Change by Ozzallos (the former another Ranma/SM cross, the second an Ah! My Goddess and later Tenchi Muyo cross)
Breaking Chains Series by TheGrum (minor Tenchi Muyo cross, minor Ah! My Goddess cross, supposedly also going to have elements of Sailor Moon and DBZ in future chapters)
Comes the Cold Dragon by Don Granberry
Ranma and Akane: A Love Story by Eric Hallstrom
the (sur)Real World by Rod M. (multi-cross)
That's all from me, now it's up to the rest of you.

My favorite fics that I would consider classics:
The More Things Change/The Pursuit of Happiness by RpM. The first fic I ever read, and still my favorite. One of the greater Ryoga/Ukyo centric fics out there, and holder of the coolest Original Character I've ever read (Ryo Muhoshin). TPOH remains unfinished.
Relentless by Grayson Towler. He finished it last year, but it was started in '98, I'd consider that a more classic time for Ranma fics. This has some of the best fight scenes of any fic I've read. Great character development, too.
Shampoo 1/2 by D. B. Sommer. It's by D.B. Sommer, what more do you need to know? My favorite 'alternate Ranma's beginning' fic.
Putting Your Heart in The Right Place/Furinken Summer, by John Biles. I have to add this just for the sheer hilarity of the whole thing. I don't think I've ever laughed so much at one story before. And it's kinda nice to have a larger spotlight on the lesser characters like Gosenkugi and later on, Shinnosuke and the Musk.
The Bitter End, by Zen. Akane fans, stay far, FAR away! For everyone else, enjoy the most angst-ridden, dark and depressing Ranma fic ever spawned (IMO). I can't understand how my brother manages to read it over and over.
Ill Met by Starlight, by Mike Loader and Susan Doenime. Considered by some to be 'THE' Ranma 1/2 dark fic. Maybe not quite as angsty as Bitter End, but a lot less biased toward anyone.

I know a lot of people seem to not like it as much as me, but how could Genma's Daughter not be included?
There is also one of my absulute favorite fics that I don't think anyone else even knows about: An Orchid Beside the Red Heaven Way
As for what else? Eh, there's plenty, can't think of any off hand...

Many people don't really see it as a Ranma fic, since Ranma acts extremely OOC once it's been realised "he" is really a "she". I do agree, however, that it is a superb story despite that and a pleasure to read.

I think the fic "Schools United" by Michael Fetter is a classic that I really enjoyed reading.

Point. But I'm also alarge fan of...I guess you could say, stories where there's no "character goes through hell". I prefer happiness...which is why I'd probably put Girl Days as my favorite fic after thinking about it a bit -- and indeed, why I like Ranma so much in general. There's very little /pure/ drama mixed in.

I still can't believe that noone seems to have read the Shaddow Chronicles. Why is it that the stories that anr't on fanfiction.net are as awesome as they are unknown?

I'll agree with that. Only one of the fics I posted can be found on ff.net, and I read it on the author's actual site, years before I even started frequenting ff.net.
Maybe the reason that they're not as well known these days is because all of the newer readers of fanfiction have started going immediately to sites like ff.net, media miner, and so on without searching the rest of the internet for the older fics that came before ff.net was created.

the main problem is that the crosslinking if loosing integrity.
I mean most of times the authors I know host their stories and little in the way of more.
I kinda miss the good old shrines and circles.

Waters Under Earth, by Alan Harnum VERY well done in my opinion. It's about as classic as you get IMO.
