I started with a 1200 baaud modem that was given to me in 1996 that was built into an ancient laptop "that I haven't used in years and am thinking of getting rid of".
How ancient? CGA Graphics, 640K of RAM.
Still able to dial some remaining BBSes, or to share some small files with a friend who had moved to Harvard, IL when I was Arlington Heights. While there was a train to let us visit (I was just getting my driver's license around then, so before that I couldn't drive), it was an hours ride.
