Modifying Red Dwarf events for use in Ranma- need assistance

For submitting and talking about story ideas. Idea submissions must be at least five paragraphs long, and include plot points, summaries of which characters are involved, and, for fanfiction, how it differs from canon. Both original and fanfiction ideas welcome. Though original works should have more development. Replying posts must give actual commentary, no "GREAT IDEA" or "THIS SUCKS".

Modifying Red Dwarf events for use in Ranma- need assistance

Postby SpaceKnight of Chaos » Wed May 30, 2007 9:08 pm

I'll try to be brief. I'm a fan of Red Dwarf, a British sci-fi/humor tv show, and there are a few plots/events from the series that caught my attention so much that I've been contemplating the idea of using them for some Ranma fiction. However, I need some help, and I'll elaborate below.

The first "potentia" is the Inquisitor. This is a time & space traveller who wanders eternity and the universe, investigating each and every sentient individual and making them testify as to their own worthiness to exist, with the failures being erased and replaced with an alternate version- an egg that wasn't fertilised, a sperm that didn't make it. Basically, when called before the Inquisitor, you must justify having lived your life the way you did, or be replaced with an "alternate you".

For this, I'm asking for suggestions on how the NWC (or any of the cast) would justify the lives they've lived, as well as your opinions on which individuals are likely to be wiped. Remember however that the objective is not actually to have lived a good and noble life, but simply to justify the life you have led. In Red Dwarf, Rimmer and the Cat were spared (and Lister and Kryten wiped) because they were such vain, shallow, selfish creatures and had thus lived their lives as best they could by their own pitiful standards. Also, there's the humor factor to consider; think what sort of reaction Ukyo and Shampoo might have if they are told Akane is to be spared and they aren't, or Ranma in the same situation with Kuno being granted life.

The second "potentia" is the psimoon from Terrorform. This is basically an artifical world that makes contact with first sentient to enter its land and then telekinetically sculpts itself into a physical representation of their psyche. My request here is simple; what, in your opinion, is the sort of landscape and metaphors that the NWC would produce if exposed to this locale? For example, Kuno's mindscape might feature "glorious" statues of him, or of his two loves, and it might be ruled by the physical embodiment of his Ego and/or Lust.
Water, water, everywhere, and all was cursed and black!
Drowned ones cast bad spell and out come pig, girl, duck, panda!
Swirl, swirl, slithery pond, and join with magic spring!
Swirl, swirl, dirty pond, and rid the cursed sting!
Here my prayer, I beg you please!
Now turn these curses BACK!

Regarding the Psimoon episode: would Kuno's landscape be like that though?
If I remember the episode correctly, the Psimoon terraformed itself to the person subconscious mind, not the conscious, and I think that'd make the landscape nothing at all like how Kuno would wish it.

I think the most interesting mindscape would be Ranma's, because while his primary emotion is his confidence, he's also got some insecurities and there's the Neko-ken lurking in the recesses of his brain as well.

Tenebrae is correct. The psymoon modelled itself after the subconscious mind, so you'll need to work out what the driving force is subconsciously for whichever character you choose to have the moon model itself after. The actual logistics of doing so might be a bit problematic though. Unless you're doing this as a spamfic, you'll need to figure out how to plausibly get the Ranma cast onto a moon which is in deep space 3 million years in the future.

If you're after the conscious mind, the Better Than Life game might be a good alternative for you, although you'll still have to organise some time travel to get it to them or vice versa.

Logistics-wise, the Inquisitor would be much easier to pull off, since he can travel through space and time. I'm curious how you'd defeat him, since he could erase anyone from existence if they tried to attack him. Ace Rimmer to the rescue, perhaps? :D

As for how each person would justify themselves... obviously, that's up to you to decide, as the author. Shampoo, given that she's shallow and selfish would probably survive. Ranma would probably survive too, given how high an opinion he has of himself. The same with Kunou. Ryouga probably wouldn't; he'd judge himself far too harshly.

*shrug* It all depends whether you want to play it seriously or as a comedy. There is great potential with this idea either way.
