The thing is, El Hazard is technically part of the Tenchi Muyo canon, according to the creators. That's one of the major reasons for choosing that series to begin with. Alternate versions of El Hazard characters are shown to exist in Tenchi canon (Fujisawa shows up as Tenchi's teacher, leading to the obvious conclusion that there exists a parallel universe version of Roshtaria and it's inhabitants somewhere in this universe).
The other being that some of the characters are spiritual "duplicates" of some of the Tenchi cast. Shayla-Shayla is just a dark-skinned, redheaded Ryouko, for example, and Ifurita and Tsunami share some similar characteristics as well. It helps to establish the parallel while keeping things neat and trim.
The thing is that focusing the action on Ranma would, I believe, be easier without involving multiple series. Especially given the fact that I'd have to start involving the extended list of characters from several series to give the characters depth. The thing is that the more series I involve, the more time I have to spend introducing characters to their (slightly altered) backstory for them to integrate well with the fanfic.
I can assume everyone's familiar with Ranma, Tenchi and Naruto. GXP is a little less certain, but the more important characters for this fic show up in both Tenchi and GXP, so people can roll with it. While I can't assume that everyone who's a Tenchi fan has seen El Hazard, it's at least a half-decent bet, given that both series share creative and directorial credits. It's the same principal as assuming that someone who's read Ranma is at least familiar with Urusei Yatsura.
I can't count on people having seen Lucky Star, Outlaw Star, Azumanga Daioh, Futaba-kun Change, or Boku no Futatsu no Tsubasa. Heck, from that list I'm not familiar enough with any one of them to feel comfortable writing those characters, but even assuming I was familiar with all of those... That's five series I have to introduce key bits of backstory for and five series I have to allude to characters from.
It's also been my experience that the more series are introduced into a piece of fanfiction, the worse the piece of fanfiction usually gets. Quality drops sharply beyond four or so series, usually. Yes, there are exceptions. Maybe I could even make this work... but it's hard to convince myself that it's worth the trouble. I'm not arrogant enough to assume I'm a good enough writer to make it work easily.
