I had something like that happen to me in the first fic I ever wrote, a Street Fighter story. What Rose up and did in the middle of the fic was a complete surprise to me. (And yet it ended up being crucial--it actually led to the fundamental underlying theme of the fic finally crystallizing in my mind as to what it actually was.)
I don't expect it to happen in this fic, though. I was a lot tighter setting things up than that time, and I've even ended up having to not start a subplot or two that I had planned on putting in, so that the end product would be more focused. Ultimately, they just weren't pulling their weight, and would have been distracting to the rhythm of the story.
