Ahhh that makes things so much easier for me... well sort of. *shrugs*
Definitely not GITS 2nd GIG or Standalone. Definitely not End of Evangelion or Death & Rebirth. Doesn't look like RahXephon.
Hmm. it's between Blue Gender the Movie. Patlabor. or Sakura Wars the Movie.
I'm going with Blue Gender.

No TV nor OVA's... Still I somehow feel compelled to say 'Escaflowne'? Tho the eyepiece kinda states that's not it. Either that or Patlabor or one of the Gundam movies I suppose, but the latter two kinda fall out of tone. Doubt those two are it.

I can't rule out that it's a mecha anime yet though.
It can't Noiseman. It doesn't look like Studio 4C.

If it's a movie of the mecha genre from 1997, it has to be Evangelion. Since it's clearly not, I'm assuming the mecha assumption to being incorrect. Looking at all the movies brought out in 1997... there isn't really one that fits the bill.
Poly Matrix was 1996 from what I can see. We can skip Mononoke Hime, and Rurouni Kenshin... Doubt this is Dragon Ball, and it's not one of the Tenchi movies... I'm drawing a blank here

I'm thinkin it's a miscategorized 97 anime. So I looked up OVAs with only 1 ep in 97 and the only one I can think of would be Submarine 707.
Edit: or Yusha Shirei Dagwon : Shisho no Hitomi no Shonen. Based on the art though, it looks more like Submarine707. But I don't think that's it either.

Actually, the Polymatrix movie is 1997. The earlier form was the four-part Armitage III OAV, which was condensed to make the movie.

My next clue would have been Kiefer Southerland, which should have been a dead giveaway...
...but since Polymatrix has been mentioned, other people would probably pass it over, thinking it was wrong. This image is Ross Syllabus in powered armor, not a giant robot.

Damn. I looked up Poly Matrix on aniDB. and it said that the release date was (20.04.1996) which was why I discounted it.
Man, I should have double checked it with animeNFO, which is what I usually do. Haha. Well at least I got it, even though I retracted it with another post.
