Outrageous Ranma by Lioconvoy
Chapter 1: An Outrageous Beginning.
Ranma got out of the cab swearing under her breath. She had hoped she be able to get some hot water before arriving at the Tendo’s home, but as luck would have it they lived in a very empty part of town. It wasn’t as if they wouldn’t find out about her curse sooner or later; still, she would rather it been later rather than sooner.
Walking down the dirt road that led to the Starlight House she wondered what the three Tendo daughters were like, and which might be her new fiancée. Their father, the recently late Soun Tendo, was a friend and a training partner of his old man. Sometime after the death of his wife he moved to America and started a home for abandoned girls and a music studio. What one thing had to do with the other was way beyond her. Still her father and Mr. Tendo made an arrangement that she would marry one of Soun’s daughters.
She…, she wasn’t supposed to be a she. Couldn’t her father have waited until she got this curse straightened out before sending her off to America.
--- One Week Ago ---
Genma and his wife entered the dojo as his son was finishing off a training kata. Genma couldn’t help but be proud of the boy’s remarkable skill. “Happy birthday boy.”
“Thanks pop. Let me guess time for another training trip?” The pigtailed martial artist frowned. From even before he could walk, each and every birthday was marked by another training trip. Some were short, and other he would only be home for a day or two before it was time for another. What was it this time?
“No Ranma this time you’re going somewhere on your own.” Nodoka smiled. Despite the curse Ranma brought back with him from the last trip he went with his father he was still a man among men. Now he was eighteen and he’d truly be able to prove he was a man. She could hardly wait for grand children.
“On my own?”
“Yes boy. You’ll be going to America to choose your bride.” When his friend gave up the art, Genma had gotten angry and promised their families would never be joined. However with Soun’s passing he regretted his decision. He would not turn back on his promise; Ranma was going to marry one of Soun’s daughters.
“WHAT! Come on Pop with my curse, who in their right mind would even think of marrying me? What girl would want a husband who’s a girl half the time himself?” What was the fat tub of lard thinking? He was in no condition to be getting married. Ever since China he turned into a girl whenever he was splashed with cold water. Hot water fixed things, but only till he got splashed with cold water again.
“Ranma, you are eighteen now. You’re a man, it is your duty to honor your father’s promise and marry one of the Tendo daughters. I’m sure your curse won’t make any difference. You father turns into a Panda and I still love him. However, if he even thinks of putting any of your children through the Nekoken you have my permission to kill him.” The Saotome matriarch grabbed the hilt of the family honor blade tightly. If not for her own aversion towards cats she would have beat her husband to death herself.
The only Saotome child looked at his mother, then back at his father. “So I’m not just randomly picking up a gaijin, I’m fulfilling some stupid promise?”
“You ungrateful ingrate! Soun Tendo was my training partner. Like I, he suffered greatly under The Master, but like I, he also survived. You should be honored you’re being allowed to marry one of his daughters.” Genma growled. Maybe he should have allowed the boy to spend more time with his mother. Then he might have better manners.
--- Present Day ---
In the end, she really didn’t have a choice. Her mother pulled out the Seppuku contract. The last thing her mother said as she boarded the plane was once she had several grand children; she would finally tear up the contract. Ranma sighed.
It had raining when she hailed the taxicab at the airport, but now the rain was stopped and the sky was clear. As she reached the Starlight house she saw three young women with instruments in the yard. They were all quite talented. The youngest was playing a keyboard, and the other two were playing guitars. “Hello, are you the Tendo sisters?”
“Okay we definitely need a better band name. That sounded truly lame.” The middle sister said, looking at the young woman who just arrived on their property. She was a petite redhead, with a killer figure that showed through the loose Chinese clothing she wore. “Can you play the drums?”
“No sorry. I ain’t any good when it comes to playing music and stuff. I can sing, but that’s about it.” She didn’t like the way the middle daughter was staring at her. “Um, I’m Ranma Saotome.”
“I thought Ranma was a boy?” Kasumi put down her bass guitar, and walked around Ranma. From all sides she definitely seemed like a girl. The backpack she wore did look a little heavier than a normal girl would be able to carry. “We could use a lead singer, but I’d really rather play my bass than play the drums.”
“Blame Akane, she’s the one who wrote the song so it needed drums in the first place.” Nabiki frowned and looked towards her youngest sister and frowned. Fortunately her older sister had talent with more than just one instatement.
“I wasn’t expecting to be playing with you two. I thought sooner or later I’d be in a real band. Nabiki do you really think we have any chance at the battle of the bands?” The youngest Tendo frowned and looked towards the visitor. “What make her lead singer material and not me?”
“Akane, Ranma has a much better look than any of us. I think she be a much better lead singer than a fiancé.” How could a girl make any sort of fiancé? Their father’s will mentioned Ranma was a boy; and she hoped he would be older. The oldest daughter sighed; Akane didn’t like boys so Ranma might actually be the perfect fiancé for her.
“Um, I can explain my gender if I had some hot water.”
“We don’t have any hot water, we don’t have working gas or electricity. We can worry about who you are later, right now I want to hear you sing.” Nabiki grabbed the lyrics of the song they were singing off of Akane’s keyboard and handed them to Ranma. “Akane some music for her please.”
The pigtailed girl looked at the three sisters. It seemed they really didn’t care who she was. What was the big deal about this battle of the bands the youngest mentioned? Looking at the paper she quickly memorize the first part of the song and the looked up at the sisters. “There’s music in the air. News is in the makin’. Music in the in air. Somethin’ big is breakin’. Wow, look around at the sight and sound. Did we take you by surprise? Bet you can’t believe your eyes. Whoa!”
“Stop, you’re definitely our new lead singer.” Nabiki smiled as brightly as she could with Ranma’s talented voice and their playing there was no way they could lose the Eric’s battle of the bands.
“That was amazing!” Kasumi grabbed Ranma’s hand. With the redhead’s help they could get the money to repair the Starlight house.
“Hey guys, we haven’t even asked her if she wants to sing with us. We can‘t force her.” Akane flinched as her older sister gave her a cruel stare. Nabiki had been in a scary mood all day.
“Akane, if we don’t do something about Eric’s faux battle of the bands tomorrow you know what will happen to the Starlight house. I won’t let that happen. Ranma’s amazing voice is just what we need. Our instrument are old, we don’t have that great of a wardrobe, but our talent will overcome that. Ranma makes us perfect. Now all we need is a name for the band and a name for Ranma.” That bastard was going to learn he couldn’t have his way with her father’s company. Tomorrow when they beat the Misfits, she’ll show Eric she knows what real talent is, and he doesn’t have a clue.
---------
After an hour more of practice the sisters finally took a break and allowed her into the house. She still hadn’t properly introduced herself or even explained the curse. During the small breaks the three of them just kept trying to come up with new names for her. Since the battle of the bands had something to do with keeping this house in order, she felt obligated to help despite the personal embarrassment. The Starlight house seemed filled with young girls with no place else to go. The fact that Mr. Tendo opened his home to all these children even while raising his own gave her a lot of respect for her father’s training partner.
Slipping into a bathroom she turned the faucet on and use her ki to heat the water. Finally he was a man again. Now he could try to start things over again with the sisters.
---------
Akane went down to the basement to check on Ryoga. Hopefully by now he had at least found the basement. He was a handy guy, but his sense of direction was ridiculous. “Ryoga?”
“Over here Akane, I’m at the fuse box.” Ryoga frowned at the mess in front of him. The house’s wiring was so old it might take him an eternity to get the electricity back up. Maybe if he had more than just the small flashlight things would go faster, but he didn’t dare bring one of the Tendo’s candle lit lanterns. Several times already he had shocked himself and if he were to knock over the lantern after another shock, it could set the whole house on fire.
“How long did it take you to find your way here?” Joining the lost boy she smiled. Ryoga was a good guy, one of the few good guys she knew. Most boys she encountered were jerks and her father’s former business partner showed her that grown men weren’t much better.
“Not to long. One of the girls lead me down her and then Ms. Hinako yelled at her for being in the basement.” Tightening a screw the basement light started to come one, and then went right back off again. “I’m sorry to say you guys are going to have another night without power. I’m starting to think this is beyond my ability to fix. When Ranma gets here I can give it another shot.”
“She’s already here. She knows about electricity?” It wasn’t as if they gave the red haired girl much time to talk about herself. There were probably a lot of things they didn’t know about her.
“She?” Ryoga dropped the screwdriver and could hardly contain his laughter. “I know he’s got long hair and all, but to mistake Ranma for a girl. Akane you need to get your eyes examined.”
“Ryoga, I know the difference between a boy and a girl. Ranma is a girl, lets go upstairs and I’ll prove it too you.” How dare Ryoga laugh at her? Ranma was a girl; with her voice and body there was no doubting it.
---------
An older woman by the name of Hinako Ninomiya sent the younger girls to bed, and Ranma was now alone with the two older Tendo sisters. Standing silently in the kitchen he didn’t really know where to begin. All he could find himself doing was staring at the flickering candle lights rather than the sisters.
“What’s this all about?” Nabiki found it hard to believe the young man in front of them was Ranma. The boy was dressed the same as her, but that was where the similarities ended. He was muscular and handsome versus petite and beautiful. Not to mention the drastic change in hair color. There was no way the black hair now was caused by the dim lighting.
“Are you really her? That same girl?” Kasumi frowned. If he was the same girl he still wasn’t any older in his new form. He was more fitting to be one of theirs fiancé though.
“Yeah, I really am. It’s kinda difficult to explain, and I sorta want as few people as possible to know.” He also wanted to wait for the youngest sister to join them. The fewer times he explained it the less chances of someone popping up unexpected and overhearing it.
“Hey Ranma!” Entering the kitchen Ryoga immediately came at his old friend with a punch. It was not surprising the pigtailed boy dodged it and returned it with a punch of his own. Not as skilled as his friend the bandanna clad boy took the full force of the blow. Fortunately he was built tough and it didn’t hurt a bit.
“Ryoga what the heck are you doing here?” He couldn’t believe his eyes. The lost boy was a classmate of his from Japan, what was he doing in America?
“I live around here.”
“Ryoga, you do know this is America not Japan.” The youngest Saotome frowned. With Ryoga’s sense of direction and habit of creating impossible short cuts maybe to him he did live around here.
“That would explain why everyone speaks English.” The lost boy wasn’t at all surprised by the Tendo sisters’ reactions. Nor was he surprised that when Akane collapsed from shock that Ranma was able to catch her. “Hey, The three of you and Ms. Hinako are Japanese. How was I supposed to know?”
“Ryoga…leave now. We have a big day tomorrow, and we don’t need you shocking us any further.” The middle Tendo daughter couldn’t believe Ryoga had thought he was in Japan. Sure she, her sisters, and Ms. Ninomiya were Japanese; but none of the other girls were. Shouldn’t that have been a big clue?
“I’ll get back to work tomorrow then. Goodnight.” Ryoga laughed as he left the kitchen. Even with his poor sense of direction he’d be here tomorrow. Somehow he always found his way to the old house. The question was, when tomorrow he’d arrive. As annoying as his family curse was, he couldn’t help but enjoy the fact he could travel thousand of miles in an instant.
Akane recovered and separated herself from the pigtailed boy. Stepping away she took a good long look at him. Like Ryoga said, the long hair didn’t make him look like a girl. So how could he be Ranma? Who was the girl who sang with them earlier? “What’s going on?”
“I told you guys earlier I needed hot water to explain the gender confusion. I used my ki to heat up some from the bathroom sink.” Once his friend’s ki was a safe distance away Ranma took a deep breath. “Last year me and my Pop went to China, while we were there we stumbled upon a super secret training ground. It turns out the place wasn’t super secret because it was a good place to train, but because people who trained there ended up cursed. Long story short; I turn into a girl with cold water. Hot water turns me back into a guy, but only till I’m splashed with cold water again.”
“So with cold water we can fix you?” The middle Tendo daughter went over to the cupboard and took out a glass. She then went over to the sink and turned the faucet on.
“Fix me? This is my true self, not the girl you met earlier. I’m a g…” Unfortunately she didn’t allow her to finish her comment before transforming her. It wouldn’t be too hard to heat up the tap water again, she had already spent enough time a girl as it was, and she promised she’d help them in the battle of the bands tomorrow. “Did you really have to do that?”
With a simple splash of water, the boy became a girl. The oldest daughter always suspected there was more to magic then pulling rabbits out of a hat, but it was amazing to see something like this. “I agree with her, with the exception of Ryoga we don’t get many visitors, we were outside the whole time, we would have seen if a second Ranma approached the house.”
“Kasumi, it was already decided Ranma would be staying the night. This is a home for girls, men aren’t allowed to stay overnight.” Besides, it wasn’t impossible for someone to come from another direction than the dirt road leading to the house. She wanted to see the transformation for herself. One of them was supposed to marry this half man? Sure she was good looking as a guy, but the fact that she wasn’t a guy all the time sort of lost her interest in the redhead.
“I guess that’s a valid reason. I hope the couch is comfortable.” Outwardly Ranma hid her emotions, inward she really hated the fact she’d be spending so much time as a girl. She got the point though, a boy wasn’t welcomed in their house after dark. If he was staying in America he was going to have to get himself an apartment. This trip was anything but what he expected.
---------
Waking up Akane noticed Ranma was no longer sharing her bed. Was she that uncomfortable sleeping with another girl? The youngest Tendo herself was used to it; before Shana and Aja moved on with their lives she and Nabiki were sharing the room. When the older girls moved out Nabiki moved into the room they had shared and she got this one to herself.
It could simply be the fact that Ranma wasn’t used to being a girl. She probably preferred being a guy since it was apparently how she started out. Now though, the pigtailed girl was both a male and a female, which probably caused a lot of confusion. Still it probably gave her a better understanding of both genders too.
One of them was supposed to marry Ranma according to her father’s last wish, somehow the youngest daughter had a feeling it would be her. She could picture her sisters saying she was the best candidate because; she hated boys, Ranma was half girl, and Ryoga was just a friend.
Getting out of bed she looked out the window and saw the redhead outside doing a practice kata.
---------
Finishing her morning practice, Ranma let out a huge sigh. Why had Akane insisted she sleep with her? Even if they were both girls at the time it made her extremely uncomfortable. So what if she was their guest and the couch was in no condition to be slept on. She’d rather sleep on the floor than share a large bed with a girl. Her mother would be so proud of her, but she knew better than that, you don’t sleep with someone until you’ve committed your life to them.
“Good morning.” Akane joined Ranma noting the frown on the other girls face. “Did you have trouble sleeping?”
“Yeah, but you don’t have to worry, I’m used to not getting a lot of sleep. Me and my old man traveled a lot, so I’ve survived on as little as an hour of rest. Swimming to China isn’t easy.” From the time she finally fell asleep to the time she woke up was four hours so she’d be fine. “You know you guys never did explain how this battle of the bands is going to save this old place.”
“When our father died three months ago, he gave us this house, but split Starlight Music five ways. Eric Raymond his assistant, got half the company, and my sisters and I each got a sixth. Neither Kasumi or I are really business minded so we gave ownership rights to Nabiki.” The youngest Tendo wanted to be a musician, but running a music company was way out of her league. “Early yesterday morning, because of all the problems we’re having with the Starlight House, Nabiki went to see Mr. Raymond. She asked him for money and not only did he turn her down flat, but he had his new band attack her. The battle of the bands today is fixed, except for Eric’s band they all have zero talent, if Eric pulls it off he’ll ruin Starlight Music. Nabiki’s plan is to show him that she’s the one who knows talent not him.”
“Even if that talent is her own?” It sorta made sense to her, but why would Nabiki be in the band.
“Kodachi, the leader of the Misfits really ticked her off, so she wanted to personally be the one to show her she has no talent.
“Hey you two. Hurry up we need to get ready.”
“You can see just how serious Nabiki is. She’s never up this early.” Akane smiled and followed Ranma inside the house. She’d have to ask the redhead about swimming to China later, Ranma seemed to be a very interesting person.
---------
On the other side of the park the battle of the bands had already started, so it seemed no one was paying attention to them setting up their own stage. Apparently Nabiki was able to borrow some speakers and other sound equipment from Starlight Music since Eric Raymond was out of the building. Right now the Misfits were playing and Ranma couldn’t help but think they did have talent. He just didn’t like their style of music.
The lead singer was Japanese and had long green hair, probably dyed, and wore a very peculiar leotard. The next girl, who like the lead singer played an electric guitar, was Chinese; you could hear a heavy accent in the words she sang. The last member seemed the most talented playing a Keytar, she dressed as flashy as the other two, but her hair was a normal color. The third girl looked oddly familiar. Going back to the second purple haired girl, he wondered if she might be an Amazon. She fit the description a friend of his gave him of his lost lover Xian Pu. What was she doing in America though, and in a rock band? The Amazon village didn’t seem to have much in the way of technology, so if the girl was Xian Pu, where did she learn how to rock?
“Okay Ranma that’s good, go and change into Jem.” Nabiki smiled, she was wracking her brain all night to think of a name for Ranma and for the band. Then this morning one of the Starlight girls, Samantha Powers, came to her with the plans for a secret weapon. The drawing was of a very strange synthesizer Sam called Synergy, it was supposed to produce holograms and was run by a special love gem. As silly as it all was it gave it gave her the names she needed. They would be Jem and the Holograms.
---------
Every thing was going as planned. The groups were just as lousy as when they auditioned for the Battle of the Bands. As the Limp Lizards finished their song Eric stepped up to the center of the stage. “Let’s hear it for the Limp Lizards!”
The boos were music to his ears. “How about the Letherettes? Did you like the Space Cadets?”
As he introduced both bands the disgust was obvious in the crowds cries. Then his chosen band took center stage. “Then lets hear it for the Misfits!”
The cheer made it obvious everything had fallen into place. “The first winners of the Starlight battle of the bands are…”
“There’s music in the air. News is in the makin’. Music in the in air. Somethin’ big is breakin’. Wow, look around at the sight and sound? Did we take you by surprise. Bet you can’t believe your eyes. Whoa!”
What was that sound? Looking across the park he saw Nabiki, her sisters, and an unknown redhead on a smaller stage. Above them was a sign that read “Jem and the Holograms” and as they played more people rushed over to their stage. This could not be happening. With the Misfits in tow Eric rushed to the other side.
“Eric, you better take care of this. I will not allow those no talent commoners to beat us.” Kodachi took out her gymnastic ribbon, if Eric didn’t do something about this, she would.
“Shampoo think, business girl get in over her head.” Shampoo unsheathed a sword she had hidden within her guitar. The short hair interferer was going to pay dearly.
“Hey they’re not that bad.” Ukyo pulled out a few small-sharpened spatulas. If a fight broke out she’d get in trouble for not helping. Something was familiar about the redhead. What it was though, she had no idea.
“Girls, girls. Let me handle this.” As Nabiki’s group finished he got right up in front of their stage. “You can’t play here, this is by invitation only!”
“She invited us.” Ranma pointed to Nabiki. The middle Tendo would take things from here.
Nabiki put down her instrument, and smirked. She was going to enjoy this. “In case you’ve already forgotten Eric darling, I own half of Starlight Music. I can invite anyone I want to a Starlight Music event. I wasn’t going to allow this rigged contest to soil my father’s company.”
“You think you can run this company better then me?” Who did this child think she was dealing with? Little miss Nabiki Tendo was in for a rude awakening; Eric Raymond was no pushover. “In six months I’ll make the Misfits more popular than Jem, and we’ll have another battle of the bands. If you win, you get Starlight music, if I win I get all of the company.”
“I accept that challenge.” With Ranma’s help, the middle Tendo knew they didn’t stand a chance of losing. It was obvious the crowd was not only taken in by her looks, but by her voice. The Misfits didn’t stand a chance.
“Allow me to sweeten the deal.”
Nabiki looked over to the new voice. He was an older man with dressed in a suit and tie, and had a mustache that sort of reminded her of her father. With him were two other men in suits with sunglasses.
“I’m Howard Sans, a movie producer. I’ll offer the winners a movie contract and this fabulous mansion.” Howard pointed to a picture one of his assistants unrolled. This could be a big draw for his studios.
Eric smiled; the contract and the Mansion were as good as the Misfits.

-On Ranmafics(dot)com’s forum their a discussion about rare crossovers. After talking about several I’d like to see this popped into my head, and stayed there for a while. To get it out of my system I’m going to write it. If know one cares about it, the story will end after the second Battle of the Bands, if there is enough interest I’ll continue it.
