BTW actually swimming from Japan directly to China is around 500 km. Which is over twice the length of the record ocean swim(without flippers).

Unfortunately I just moved. Digging through my boxes to find a ref which might not be there would be, at best, a nightmare. It might be an anime-only thing (probably is) but even in manga-only canon Ranma would be easily capable of performing the GP academy feats, especially by the end of the manga. The laps presented are a quarter of a kilometer (presumably, based on the visual evidence), meaning the fifty laps add up to a grand total of 12.5 kilometers. Five times adds up to just over sixty kilometers... Which wouldn't tax Ranma's endurance much.

Actually the field scale looked more like a Full KM track like they have at some Olympic sports centers. But even then it's still within Ranma's limits as far as what is shown for what he has endured growing up.

I'm basing the quarter-kilometer thing partially based on the fact Seina pushed through and completed the regimen each day, in spite of the fact he's an unaugmented human. Doing sixty KM a day is outside the scope of a realistic human, but fits right into a shounen series about hard work.

250 Km, not so much. I might be wrong, though it'd make Seina doing the training in the days leading up to his Body Enhancement that much more impressive.

Seina's limitation and Human endurance in track limits still presupposes that the GxP training center has Earth Gravity. A couple tweaks in gravity and atmosphere. (Higher Oxygen percentage) can go a long way to increasing ones performance just because the environment doesn't promote exhaustion as easily.

Now I'm just theorizing I don't know if that really is the case but for how things are drawn and adding things up it's my explanation.

Things we know about Ranma growing up....

Leaving Nodoka
Meeting Ukyo, age 6
Neko-ken, age 10
Meeting ryoga, 14/15(this is kind of screwy)
Training in china

Limits based on past events are more conjecture than anything else.

He didn't finish them each day though. He worked until he couldn't go any further and was forced to stop. Seiryo even states that he didn't complete a single one.

There's no way a relatively normal human could do 5000 pushups and situps in a day. And considering that they want their troops to be the best, it was likely a 250km track. That's purely guessing though, since you never see the ends or a full shot of the field.

Hmmm... I only read some of the replies so far, but the major hangup seems the body enhancement.

Really, I think it is being made a bigger deal than it should.

Picture it this way...

- Take a standard human, Ranma is much more powerful

- Take a standard human and give body enhancement, Ranma physically, is probaly at or near level, perhaps just under. That does *not* change he has advantage in skills and techniques.

- Take a unenhanced Ranma and give body enhancement. I see this as returning the playing field to normal for Ranma. A enhanced Ranma would likely be as far above an standard human that was enhanced, as he was unenhanced against a unenhanced person.

Personally... given his training and techniques... I cannot picture a enhanced Kiyone wininng against Ranma post Saffron. Even if she matches strength and speed, there is techniques.

If you really want to use the curse to mess with them then make the girl that drowned a Jurian, doesn't have to be royalty.

That way they would get mixed signals, and have no reason to involve Jurai directly. In addition iirc it was implied that Jurians didn't need enhancement (If that pink haired twit was enhanced then something must have gone wrong with the process...)

Wargiver, I'm not sure I want to take the easy way out and make Ranma's curse Juraian. I dunno, but it'd feel kinda cheap to me. If the curse were Juraian, it'd take out the dramatic punch of the reveal later on that yes, Ranma's ANOTHER human in the Galaxy Police. One of the themes of this story is probably going to be the recurring thought that "Maybe these humans deserve a closer look. Their technology might suck, but it's becoming very clear that they themselves do not."

Anyway...

I just realized I've got a major problem. Since I've placed the timeline for this story post-GXP, I've got a decided lack of cast to fill the position of Ranma's classmates and Kiyone's fellow instructors. While I suppose I could just make up a bunch of characters to fill the gaps... I didn't write a crossover to write "original characters with Ranma in SPACE!"

I suppose I could use a strained contrivance like having Seina just happen to be at GP headquarters when Ranma arrives and have the unlucky boy be caught up in the wacky hijinks and whatnot, or I could involve another series.

I've decided to go with the latter option and export the cast of El Hazard wholesale, tweak 'em a bit to make them fit in the GP, and turn 'em loose. The idea seemed weird at first, but I think it'll work out.

Rune Venus is an instructor, her little sister Fatora reluctantly following in her footsteps and JUST starting to attend the academy. Likewise Miz and Afura are instructors, with Shayla-Shayla being a fresh graduate who happens to be there for Ranma's first trip. Those three, of course, are from some species which allows them to manipulate the elements. It even allows me to give Ranma an enemy in the form of the Bugrom, by turning them from a marauding fantasy army into marauding space pirates. Of course he catches the attention of Queen Diva, as well...

I'm mainly looking forward to the interactions between Ranma and Fatora. Fatora likes women and is not particularly honest about how she gets around to sleeping with them. Ranma has demonstrated a distaste for women who want his girl side, and has a record of trying to bring them back to the right side. Fatora chasing Ranma's girl side while Ranma tries to get her interested in his guy side (motivated by his pride, of course) has potential for comedy GOLD. Not to mention Airi and Miz sitting together and complaining about "the upstart Earthling with the GALL to call US old!"

So... What does everyone think of this idea? Will El Hazard in space work?

What about that Male crew that repeatedly attempt to become pirates? Maybe they could be in the Academy along with Tennan as some kind of Remedial re-education/punishment. Similar to how Amane was made an instructor only their violations are much worse so their back to being Students to retake the entire curriculum?

My only problem with that is that they're kinda flat, personality wise. Their major defining characteristics are their love of Ryoko (which is, as of the end of the series, a moot point) and the aforementioned wanting to be pirates. Thing is, without Ryoko being their leader, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't want to be pirates anymore. Then I'm left with three characters who don't have any defining characteristics... So I'm back in the boat of having to essentially make up OCs for the plot.

I could see working Seiryo back into the plot somehow, but with his fiancee Kyo there to keep him reasonable I don't think he'd be much fun to work with. She's got some pretty good strongarm tactics to keep him in line, after all.

In a way that's why so many people have to go AU when they use an even Semi-resolved series. And GxP had a rather sound resolution. It wasn't a classic Happily Ever After but it did have nearly all the loose ends tucked in securely.

True. I suppose in a way I'm making Ranma a spiritual successor to Seina and Tenchi... Some poor Earthling who gets in way over his head and has his ideas of peace and quiet forever shattered. Unfortunately for him, running back to Earth isn't going to solve his problems, just change the nature of them. Tenchi and Seina, at least, have the option of ducking back home and getting away from it all for a few weeks.

By the time I'm done with Ranma, he'll have nowhere to hide.

It's not like Ranma has had many places aside from the ridgeline of the roof or shore of a drainage canal anyway.

Since Japanese seems to be a popular language in space, and it seems that it is probably the native language of Jurai imported to Earth by Juraians who landed there secretly, partly Yosho, and partly some of his predecessors, it might be a good idea to import anime characters with Japanese names, at least for some of the more human looking ones that make up about half the population.

Rather than draw your entire cast from one other series, I might mix and match, and possibly mix some of them into the GXP universe in various ways.

For example, you could have Tennan Sakura (Converted Naruto character) from the same clan as Seriyo, who gets picked on for her large forehead, and has something of passive aggressive disorder bordering on multiple personalities, and is a super genius who will develop medical leanings. Sakura would become a Ranma fangirl after he protects her from being picked on and because Earth tends to produce interesting guys like Tenchi and Seina, and Ranma is even better looking than Seina.

And since Ranma is a gender changing shapeshifter perhaps he'd wind up in a 3rd set of dorms for neither/both genders, leading to the likes of Kashiwagi Makoto (Boku no Futatsu no Tsubasa) a naive and sheltered 'girl' who is actually from a hermaphrodite race with enhanced physical capabilities and telekinetic abilities that drain her stamina quickly, who is half-Juraian from a rich Juraian family but of no sort of nobility or tree possessing history, and is really tall and busty. And Shimeru Futaba (Futaba-kun Change!), from a race able to shift genders at will in adulthood, but during puberty they change when aroused and they grow up as the gender they were born in, Futaba was born male, and like many of his race, has some odd traits, particularly concerning the girl form at times, Ranma might briefly be mistaken for Futaba's race. ((Notably, in Futaba-kun change, Ryoko and Ayeka have cameos as students at Futaba's school, and in the end his family turns out to be descended from aliens))

And to throw in some additional fangirls who have become Ranma fans chasing him and stick a bit with the GXP themes:

Izumi Konata (Lucky Star), an extra petite girl who looks a bit like a kid, but unlike Neju, this is her natural adulthood, at least for her mother's race, her father is a human-looking type, possibly some sort of Juraian commoner (and noted photographer), she is an unrepentant otaku, but has also become something of an idol follower in terms of famous people in space, like Seina, Tenchi, and members of their harems, and is drawn to Ranma partly because he's from Earth and defeated Saffron, and partly because he is good looking in both genders and amusing to watch. She is also surprisingly athletic and good at martial arts. In particular, she is a big fan of cabbits, and might later manage to get her hands on one of the failed Fuku clones that don't have any special powers.

Aisha Clanclan (Outlaw Star) from the Ktarl Ktarl empire out of Jurai space, her people are a bit war-like and particularly value strength, and also run some successful pirating schemes in Jurai space, and her father is actually one of the leaders of the current Pirate guild, she was sent to infiltrate GP academy in order to get her hands on secret information and attempt to investigate Seina, as well as the new Earthling Ranma, and Earth in general, due to the threat Seina poses to Pirating in general. She initially just poses as a Ranma fangirl, but soon becomes a real fan who has real feelings for Ranma in her own way and personality. She serves a similar foil to Ranma as Erma/Ryoko, although without the multiple identities, merely secretly feeding intel to her father.

Nagisa Kaworu (NG Evangelion), the illegal result of a cloning project in an attempt to create an army of soldiers that would rival Ryoko by a pirate group, Kaworu was one of the only experiments to actually possess any special powers, he has a powerful telekinetic barrier around his body, a sort of personal shield, and actually generates a lot of energy, although most of it goes to this personal shield, which he has little control over. Kaworu has a creepy personality and unclear sexuality, and is Ranma's token fanboy, he also happens to be a bit suicidal and actually hates the GP and plans to destroy their headquarters with a powerful illegal high explosive invented by Dr. Clay and stolen by space pirates, his pursuit of Ranma has nothing to do with that, and he initially will try to make sure Ranma is away from the academy when he sets off the bomb, and also plans to be taken out with the station by sitting right next to the bomb as it goes off. The main reason he got into the GP despite his being a pirate experiment is because he is a masterful manipulator of people's emotions, and managed to trick them he is more sane than he really is.

Some of Ranma's teachers might be: Ebisu (Naruto) an egotistical teaching expert who was some minor teacher of a class Seina was in that Seina didn't really care about, who Seina barely remembers, but has a bit of an inflated ego because he'd taught Seina some minor thing personally in a single conversation he had with him, and thinks it is partly his own teaching that made Seina become a great hero, plus Ebisu has been a teacher long enough that he also played a minor role in teaching some other noted GP officers like Amane and Kiriko and Mihoshi, Amane doesn't actually even remember him, despite having been on the same teaching staff, partly since Seiryo kept hogging all the attention during staff meetings. Ebisu prides himself on being a polite gentleman, and is dreadfully embarrassed and paranoid about protecting his secret porn and sexy girls in magazine covers collection, a large part of the sexy clothed parts made up of Amane. Ebisu actually is a pretty good teacher, even if he is a bit forgettable and annoying, and truly cares about teaching and his students and is passionate about his work. Ebisu is made fun of by Ranma for being a closet pervert when Ranma catches how he eyes Ranma's girl form after a water accident and also discovers Ebisu's secret porn stash somehow, possibly due to the crazed 'Viral Seina Data' escaping into GP networks again and interacting with some 'viral Jyuusenkyo data' from Ranma that tries to turn all the AIs on the system female, and winds up shuffling a lot of data around, and causing 'Ebisu's secret stash, don't look, classified' to wind up on the console in Ranma, Futaba, and Makoto's room, which Makoto examines out of curiosity while Ranma and Futaba are present, partly pissing off Ranma as there is a security cam image of his girl form in a skimpy state of clothes in there, causing him to tease and pick on Ebisu as a sort of revenge.

Tanizaki Yukari (Azumanga Daioh), she isn't too bad as a teacher, but she turned out a bit too lazy for being a GP officer, and also people try to keep her away from spaceships, because while she hasn't managed to actually crash, she flies them or any vehicle she gets in, in an insane and dangerous manner and he vehicle always winds up rather beaten up, and anyone riding with her traumatized, they try to keep her as a teacher and living near where she teaches to keep her from driving anything. Yukari likes picking on Ebisu and is rather competitive with the other teachers, and hates Amane and Kiriko, who kept on hogging a lot of attention while they were teaching, despite also secretly having had crushes on them, as she is a closet lesbian. Yukari wants all the best students in her classes, and is usually lazy, but also gets fired up easily in any sort of competition or opportunity to show off, unfortunately she often messes up attempts to show off personally, so she likes to live vicariously through her more successful students and take credit for their work. She has, on occasion, used some limited hacking skills and her teacher position to modify the class rosters to get the best students, unfortunately for her, she also tends to get a lot of the weirdos and dunces as well, but she doesn't try to remove them from her classes, as she tends to form sentimental bonds towards all her students, although she is reluctant to show it or admit it.

Personally I think drawing all the academy characters from one source like Ikari first suggested would be better for keeping them in character. The way characters interact with each other is one of the things that help define them. Taking one character from a series and making alterations to them before placing them in another series can easily end up with them being closer to OCs dressed up as an imported character. By using one series it is easier to keep them closer to their source material at the start because the other characters they interacted with will also be there so at least some of the characteristic interactions can be kept.
