...Don't swear at me, please. Thank you.
But to answer your question, it's the "challenge" bit. Let me explain what I've dealt with as far as that goes:
Battle Tower: Sapphire - Best Battle Tower streak was 85, and this after I started using non-Hoenn Pokemon. Never did get that Gold trophy, or whatever it was called.
Battle Frontier: Emerald - Obtained all the Silver Symbols and two Gold Symbols (the Battle Dome's and the Pyramid's). In both games there were 376 usable Pokemon at this point, and Abilities had been introduced.
Battle Frontier: Platinum - Four Silver Symbols out of Five, with the Battle Factory being the sole absentee. No Gold Symbols. Usable Pokemon at around 470 or so. Typing was no longer a factor in determining ATK or SP. ATK usage.
Battle Subway: B/W, B2/W2 - Limited success in the Subway, particularly in Double Battles. Several attempts were made to reach the Subway Masters in the Super Battles in both Single and Double. All have ended in failure, with few---if any---victories to my credit. Usable Pokemon: more than 610.
Pokemon World Tournament: B/W, B2/W2 - Reached the Champions tournament. Failed to win a single one, winning only one battle in the five or six times I tried to play it. Against the likes of Red, Cynthia and Steven Stone and playing on
their terms, my A-game was never going to be enough.
Battle Maison: X/Y - Succeeded at Single, Double, and Multi Battles. Haven't won a Super Battle even once, and it hasn't been for a lack of trying. Usable Pokemon: around 690 or so. Hidden Abilities are much more prevalent here than they were in the 5th Gen games. The addition of the Fairy-type mixed things up a bit as far as some pre-existing Mons were concerned.
Ratings Battles: X/Y - Lost three to four times as many games as I've won, which aren't many. Not too surprising, since these are real people here and not computer players.
You'll notice a trend here: with each new aspect, feature or tweak that they make in the games, my success level drops in response. What I never mentioned in that list is that along with the new Pokemon, newer Abilities and who-knows-how-many new moves have made their appearance. There's been an increasing emphasis on IVs and EV training (though some could say that's always been there). I've been trying my best, and my best keeps falling flat. To put it another way: yes, Virginia, the post-game is too stinking hard for me. (And there is no Santa Claus.) Putting a Battle Frontier in OR/AS would've utterly
swamped me. This is not my "kidding" face.
Putting aside what I've been saying, though, I see no need to complain about the Frontier's absence
or the reasons given. Part of it's because the games are remakes of Ruby and Sapphire, not Emerald. The rest of it is that ultimately, for all that I've been in love with the games since the 2nd Gen, I don't feel that any aspect of them is even
worth complaining about. Because for all the hype, for all the cash they generate and the professional tournaments they've spawned, when you get right down to it, only one question needs to be asked regardless:
"Are the games still fun?"
