I was in Bangkok in 2006, staying at a hotel next to a Catholic girl's school - St. Joseph Convent School. One day I was on the street when school let out. Honest to God, it looked like Lillian Academy (Marimite) students. Almost identical outfits. The other thing I noticed was the street entirely jammed off with expensive automobiles waiting to pick up the girls. I hope the cars were family ...

This photo is not quite how I remember the uniforms. Part is the color (though I have seen pictures with black skirts also) and part is the tie (though I have seen pictures of the sailor thing) as I was looking on the net for pictures. I probably took some myself, but that camera died. Also, we were there during the cold season. This Minnesotan was comfortable in skirt and shot sleeve shirts, but I saw Thai wearing something halfway between a hoodie and a parka. So: imagine a black skirt, a black jacket or long-sleeve top, and the sailor neckpiece.

Giggle Translate messes up the text, but they seem to be in the Malaysian image group.

Edit: Yes, it seems to be a standard uniform for the first five grades of secondary school in Malaysia. That Wiki describes it as a turquise pinafore over a white shirt.

What you have there are common Loons.

Same bird as is found on the Canadian One Dollar Coin, which are commonly called "Loonies"

And where do we keep our Loonies here in Canada?

In a Loonie Bin.

My first thought on that... he's making that up...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loonie proved that not to be the case...

Tho I couldn't find anything on that loonie bin, other than https://clone.nl/all/label/loonie%20bin which seems like a discount bin at the record shop.

Anyway... To keep with the thread: https://i.redd.it/eopc06kwn1451.jpg

Yah, my passport looks similar.

Loonie bin is just a play on Loony bin, however I found a picture of a loonie bin.

The Canadian Two Dollar coin is known as a Toonie and has a polar bear on the reverse face.
The toonie moniker is a play on the loonie.

It also means we have the only portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with a bear behind.

It's common knowledge a cat may look at a King. That coin-flip is somewhat more disturbing.

Ok, now I know what "loon" is. Nice checkered(?) birdie. Well, kind of checkered, that pattern on the wings.

Trying to learn how it is called on this side, the dictionary netted two variants:

1. Gagara (diver/loon). With Wikipedia emphasizing there are four distinct species: white-beaked, black-cropped, red-cropped and black-beaked.
2. Kanadskaya kazarka (Canadian brant). With addendum that this bird is a national symbol of Canada so it is displayed on the Canadian dollar. Um... Something is not right here.

That's why you always, always double-check dictionary translations using image search in a search engine that does not not have a search bubble, like duckduckgo.com

We have 'only' two loons/divers here in the Chibi White North: The Red-throated and the Common. I'm guessing it was the latter that shocked Ranma when (s)he was learning how to cat while in Minnesota.

Darn right! It sounded like a vaguely more cheerful Kuno Kodachi. As for the "Canadian brant", it's called a "Canada goose" around here. (Minnesota is right next door to Canada. We share flora and fauna.

The Canada goose was rare when I was young during the Fifties. Now it's so common it's a pest. Don't tell me the whole ecology is going down the tubes, please, when we have geese and ducks, and even loons, in our lakes. And there is a bald eagle living in our neighborhood, an inner-ring suburb. Where, thankfully, we have not had any riots.

Also, there is a story of an immigrant referring to the Canada goose as 'cobra chicken'. I would guess that came from its posture and noises.

Mind, there is a brant. It's a small, dark-coloured goose, known here as 'sea goose', probably because of its preference for seafood.

ION, it looks safe to say that Ranma's age was still counted in months when That Contract was signed.

I'd bet it's because of how fast it is when biting people that annoys it. :P

Plenty of something unfortunately does not mean it's good. It's kinda like rabbits in Australia, there's lots of them, but it's not a good thing.

I can even use where i live as a direct comparison, as i've noted since i moved here 20+ years ago that geese and similar birds have become vastly more numerous, but meanwhile, many of the smaller birds have drastically dropped in numbers, or i've outright not seen any of them for the last decade.
Haven't seen any sea eagles for almost 15 years either. Used to always be 1-3 around the edges of the town during summer.

The really worrying thing however is the severe drop in pollinating species in that same time. And my country nor region isn't even among the worst affected by that. Especially bees, bumblebees and butterflies are very noticeably fewer now than 20 years ago.
Glyphosphate has been identified as one primary reason with some genetically modified crops as "highly likely" contributors, but Monsanto is pulling tricks to keep it from becoming banned and so far has been sadly successful in that.

Where, thankfully, we have not had any riots.

Good to hear. Stay safe and careful.

Canada geese (yes, the plural for them is Canada, not Canadian) are definitely pests and, because of hunting restrictions, have taken over many parks and beaches in Vancouver, leaving their green, cigar sized tubes of poop everywhere.

One landed on my balcony rail last year. Which was terrifying, as you do not want one of those beasts in your home.
