Hm... well its not Sakura Wars... a strat/rpg that became a 3 ep ova? Sadly I am not very familiar with the mecha genre but lets go with perhaps Front Mission, since that is the only mecha strat/rpg I know of.

Mecha is so not my thing... Only ones that pop to mind are either Robotech/Macross or Gundam. And neither is based on an RPG... Nor 3 eps long...

I don't know but I'm going to guess Super Robot Taisen/Super Robot Wars because I was talking to someone earlier and they had mentioned they just watched it and it's an anime based on a RPG (I think).

Late eighties it is then... Lets see... City Hunter started in 1987, while Crying Freeman drops us in 1988.
Gah... The picture doesn't ring a bell with me. Only the white-hair or something in the middle looks vaguely familiar, but that would drop me off with Tenshi na Konamaiki which is distinctly newer...

Yep, definitely older than Tenhi no Konamaiki.
I will say that the white is just a reflection effect and that the character's hair is actually uniformly black.
