Ranma + Tenchi GXP Crossover

For submitting and talking about story ideas. Idea submissions must be at least five paragraphs long, and include plot points, summaries of which characters are involved, and, for fanfiction, how it differs from canon. Both original and fanfiction ideas welcome. Though original works should have more development. Replying posts must give actual commentary, no "GREAT IDEA" or "THIS SUCKS".

IIRC, no one sides Ryoko actually speaks Japanese, they simply have energy fields around themselves that translate everything they see and hear. I think it was the astroboynerd or whatever site that had the info.

Which in my version will be the reason why the keyboards appear blank to everyone but the user, since it detects the user and configures the itself accordingly.

To Heaven's Deamon:

I can see where you are coming from, but the point of fanfiction isn't to verbatim repeat the cannon interactions. Having a blend of characters from different series might make it harder to keep them in character, but it is just as nuts to expect them to have neary identical interactions in a totally different setting and culture.

My intention wasn't to have these characters be exactly the same as their original counter parts, but more inspired by them and trying to avoid being OC or Mary Sue, and fill out Ranma's classmates and teachers with characters that aren't quite OC, to avoid complaints about that, but keep the story and interactions fresh and original, their personalities should reflect the originals, but within the constraints of the new setting, keeping them away from characters from the same series would help insure that they don't just end up badly imported clones from the other series or try to squeeze in an altered duplicate of the other series' plot just to get the character interactions nearly identical.

Avoiding too much in the way of action leads also helps keep the focus on Ranma, and drawing them from different series gives the plot and cast a diversity and freshness you don't get with them all from the same series, plus helps with emphasizing the diversity found in GP academy, filled with people from all sorts of different planets and races. It also will help keep Ranma's interactions with each of them distinctly flavored, and broaden the scope of Ranma's character development and interactions in the plot. It might be a bit harder to write, but I think it is easier to write _well_, using characters all from the same other story in such an incidence is a good shortcut to bad writing, particularly due to the diversity of a multi-species space setting. It also helps encourage them to have original interactions with Ranma, rather than merely interact among themselves to have them all from different series.

The thing is, El Hazard is technically part of the Tenchi Muyo canon, according to the creators. That's one of the major reasons for choosing that series to begin with. Alternate versions of El Hazard characters are shown to exist in Tenchi canon (Fujisawa shows up as Tenchi's teacher, leading to the obvious conclusion that there exists a parallel universe version of Roshtaria and it's inhabitants somewhere in this universe).

The other being that some of the characters are spiritual "duplicates" of some of the Tenchi cast. Shayla-Shayla is just a dark-skinned, redheaded Ryouko, for example, and Ifurita and Tsunami share some similar characteristics as well. It helps to establish the parallel while keeping things neat and trim.

The thing is that focusing the action on Ranma would, I believe, be easier without involving multiple series. Especially given the fact that I'd have to start involving the extended list of characters from several series to give the characters depth. The thing is that the more series I involve, the more time I have to spend introducing characters to their (slightly altered) backstory for them to integrate well with the fanfic.

I can assume everyone's familiar with Ranma, Tenchi and Naruto. GXP is a little less certain, but the more important characters for this fic show up in both Tenchi and GXP, so people can roll with it. While I can't assume that everyone who's a Tenchi fan has seen El Hazard, it's at least a half-decent bet, given that both series share creative and directorial credits. It's the same principal as assuming that someone who's read Ranma is at least familiar with Urusei Yatsura.

I can't count on people having seen Lucky Star, Outlaw Star, Azumanga Daioh, Futaba-kun Change, or Boku no Futatsu no Tsubasa. Heck, from that list I'm not familiar enough with any one of them to feel comfortable writing those characters, but even assuming I was familiar with all of those... That's five series I have to introduce key bits of backstory for and five series I have to allude to characters from.

It's also been my experience that the more series are introduced into a piece of fanfiction, the worse the piece of fanfiction usually gets. Quality drops sharply beyond four or so series, usually. Yes, there are exceptions. Maybe I could even make this work... but it's hard to convince myself that it's worth the trouble. I'm not arrogant enough to assume I'm a good enough writer to make it work easily.

I didn't actually know about that, now I want to see El Hazard! :)

I just started to feel incredibly otakuish for knowing all those different series.

I still think it might have been a good idea to at least put Ranma in a gender uncertain dorm room because of the curse, and partially for the potential amusement and psychological factors, but if you aren't familiar with other such series, then it is a good idea to avoid them. I was thinking of Futaba-kun change! in particular because Ryoko and Ayeka cameoed in it and it has similar weird martial arts silliness in parts that seem to be Ranma inspired and he turns out to be from an alien race in the end, plus there has been at least a couple good Ranma crossovers with it. If you aren't familiar with Futaba or Makoto, perhaps you are familiar with Ren/Run from Tu-Love-Ru? Also an alien gender shifter, with different personalities in the different forms.

Oh, I'll be cooking something up for Ranma's gender problems, don't worry.

As for El-Hazard... The best way to describe it is probably a more mature version of Tenchi. There's an actual conflict to the story not resolved by making the main character even more like god, and the harem shows a lot more character growth over the course of the OVAs. Plus, it has a wacky pervert lesbian who looks exactly like the main character and takes full advantage of this fact to make passes at his harem.

Ranma will most likely mention girl troubles fairly quickly. Seeing as he's Both genders why not have Kamiki Seto Jurrai-sama try to hook 'her' up with some guys? After all GxP did make a point of showing how poorly she matches certain individuals up.

If you mean with Amane, then Seto purposely gave her bad matches.

Oh yes, this is definitely going to happen. I've already got the aftermath planned for his first meeting with Seto.

Ranma: Hey Captain. You gotta tell me how to deal with her. She said she solved your relationship problems for you, but near as I can tell she's making things worse for me.
Seina: Uh, deal with?
Ranma: Yeah. How do I handle her.
Seina: You don't. She handles *you*.
Ranma: Well, how'd she solve your problems?
Seina: *sigh of the damned* She had me married to them all. It's not solved. I just can't legally run away anymore.
Ranma: *horrified look over to Seto, who smiles and waves*

This would be followed by a nightmare sequence where Ranma imagines being married to Shampoo, Ukyou, Akane, Kodachi, Kunou, and whoever else he manages to get chasing after him.

Keep in mind that Seina's marriage had a lot of BIG political reasons behind it. Seto didn't just arrange it because she was bored.

Seto-san also sent Ivy around to talk to all the girls before seeing what she could do to make it so they wouldn't have so much trouble staying together. How the other girls from outside their sector ended up getting Seto's aid to get a hold of Seina though I still don't know.

Ranma doesn't know that, and I doubt it'd occur to Seina to fill him in. Seina's a good guy, but subtle doesn't really occur to him that much. Heck, he spends most of the series clueless about the more subtle things going on around him.

Besides, if Ranma knew that Seto wouldn't just marry him off to someone at a whim, it'd decrease his dread of her instead of increasing it. Ranma will fear The Demon Princess of Jurai. He will fear her right to the marrow of his bones!

Mwuhahahaha!

I have all the vids on my comp playing at random and right now GxP 15 Fuku runs away is playing. It is the most painful out of all the Tenchi Muyo series episodes for me to watch. Even Tenchi in Tokyo is easier just because no one is being neglected and subverted like Fuku is in that one ep. And it had me wondering How much Cabbit Screen time will there be in this fic? How does Ranma react to Cabbits in your mind?

I've seen too many fics where it's just handwaved away that because Cabbits look kinda like rabbits as well as cats, Ranma can be fine with them. I think, for the humor factor, a cabbit snuggling up to him can trigger a full blown nekoken incident. Especially with a cutesy "Miyah!"

It'll make the time Ranma spends with Seina's crew that much more hilarious. Especially if (when) Fuku notices this strange reaction and decides to do her best to investigate. Then Fuku, bless her heart, learns that if she chases Ranma around enough, she gets a friend who will play with her for a few hours!

Of course, one such time when Ranma's playing with Fuku will have to happen during an attack. :)

Problem, it takes a LOT of cats, plus a tiger, for Ranma to go into the neko-ken when he doesn't want to. Only time a single cat did it was during the fight on the beach to get the Phoenix pill, when he wanted to do it. So why would a creature that only sounds like a cat send him over the edge?

Cabbits still have cat faces. So maybe with Miyahing and being right up in Ranma's face out of curiosity and maybe worry about the new guy possibly rejecting her.

Don't forget prolonged exposure of a few min with shampoo on her face was enough for Ranma-chan fighting against Shapoo's Grandmother that one time.
